Schodack Island State Park

  • Schodack Island State Park

    South of Castleton, NY
    1 Schodack Way
    Schodack Landing, NY (map)

    42.506731 -73.683911

  • We will be hiking / snowshoeing or even cross country skiing the entire perimeter trail of Schodack Island State Park which is a total of about 5 miles.  Conditions will dictate what we do.  The trail is flat with very little incline.  There is a connector trail that leads down to the Schodack Creek Observation Point   Bring your binoculars and if you would like to bring a lunch we can stop there to eat and bird watch.  There is a picnic table at the point.   There are many small birds that inhabit the area.

Schodack Island State Park sits off the eastern shore of the Hudson River just south of Albany. Approximately seven miles of Hudson River and Schodack Creek shoreline bound the 1,052-acre site. A day-use facility, the park has been designated a State Estuary, and a portion of the park shelters a Bird Conservation Area (BCA) that is home to bald eagles, cerulean warblers and blue herons that nest in the cottonwood trees. Eight miles of multi-use trails wind through a variety of ecological communities.

If there is snow... bring your snowshoes or cross country skiis.  Depending on the snow cover microspikes will work also.

Just saw the latest weather forecast; I'm an hour and a half away in good weather, so with the bad weather predicted, I think it's better that I cancel now and let someone else have the spots so they can make plans. Have a good time!

In the event I get on the list to go, about how long do you think this will be? I'm thinking hike by 10:30ish hike for approx 2hrs and back around 1. Is that about right?

I got really sick this past week and was in bed most of the time :-(. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect that I'd be well enough or strong enough to get back out there by Sat :-(. On the plus side, 2 people get my spot....

This hike is pretty easy... more like a "cake walk".... but it is long. Schodack is fairly flat. We do make stops along the way. Now if we get snow on Friday and get to snowshoe it will be more strenuous and slower.

I'm the one who is building strength following a hip replacement. Went on the short hike at Grafton Park Winter Fest. Don't know if I'm up to 5 miles at this point.

I'm hoping for another easy, weekend, snowshoe or hike so I can build up my strength to tackle some of the 5 mile hike -- pleeeze!

Dorothy, you DO realize that there is a cake walk conspiracy, right?

    February 2, 2013

  • Jeannie T.

For some of the hikes and hiking groups, they advertise, "this is not a cake-walk". Well, truth be told, I want to sign up for one of those. Where are the cake-walks? Boston Creme, German Chocolate Cherry....
