Rescheduled from May 11.
This class is for those who have little or no experience on how to use a map and compass.
We will go over the map (explain contour lines, magnetic north, how to identify landmarks, etc.) and parts of the compass. You will learn to take sightings of local landmarks to determine where you are. We will begin this outing at the Waterford Boat launch. Please meet at Peebles Island and we will walk over to the boat launch together. Those of you who do not have an Empire Pass for the state park system meet us at the Waterford Boat Launch as the park is charging admission this time of year. We will begin promptly at 10:00 AM.
After the initial class we will take a hike around Peebles Island, stopping at the southern end to practice the newly learned skills.
You must bring a compass to this outing along with a pencil. You will need a base plate type compass... with degree markings and a dial. We will provide the topographical maps that we will be using.
If you have any questions about this outing please email me.
