Hike/Snowshoe Hadley Mountain

Depending on the weather we may be hiking or snowshoeing.

At 2,653 feet you are at the summit of Hadley Mountain. You will have sweeping views in 360 degrees including Spruce Mountain and the Great Sacandaga Lake.  Make sure to read the sign about the old fire tower. About 3.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1525 feet. This should take about 3+ hours to complete and is rated as a moderately strenuous hike due to the elevation gain in a short distance.  This is an in and out hike.  We plan to hike at approximately 1 mph with breaks as necessary.

The trail is well maintained.

The area around Hadley Mountain has had a history of forest fires. There were several in the early part of the twentieth century. The mountain is still slowly recovering.

One thing you'll notice on this hike is the many patches of bare rock that begin early in the climb. This is due to the thin soils left by all the fires.

The wide trail takes you to the ridge of the West mountain range. You then turn right and head North to the summit. Shortly before reaching the summit, you will see the old fire observer's cabin (now used by the summit steward).

The fire tower is open, but good views can be had without climbing it. The Great Sacandaga Lake is the body of water to the South.

This drive and hike should take approximately 6 hours. It is more difficult because of the elevation gain in a short distance. Also, please bring a lunch and snacks as we will take a break to eat at the Fire Tower. Waterproof, rugged hiking boots are mandatory. Please bring plenty of water, and dress for the weather as well.

Microspikes are recommended due to the possible icy conditions.

Minimum age is 8 (8-15 yrs must have a participating adult with them, 16-17 yrs must have a parent/guardian sign participant agreement but do not need to attend)

• please be dressed for the weather (layers and no cotton)

• wear appropriate hiking / snowshoeing footwear

• microspikes are recommended for this shoulder season... may be ice

• snowshoes if we have snow

• please bring water, snacks and any personal medicines you may need as well as sunscreen (yes, even in winter), sunglasses, rain gear and day pack

• Waterproof rugged hiking boots are mandatory

• hiking poles (if you have)

•camera and/or binoculars, if you have them

Dogs are not permitted at any of this group's outings.

If you have any trouble finding us, my cell is[masked], feel free to call or text during the meetup times, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.  Look for my black Jeep Liberty.  Cell phone coverage is spotty in this area.

Hope you can join Seth and I for this hike or snowshoe outing.

Trailhead: From Saratoga, take Rte 9N going north.
When you reach the village of Lake Luzerne, turn left at first light onto East River Drive.
Turn left onto Bridge Street. Turn right onto Stony Creek Rd (CR1).
After 3 miles, turn left onto Hadley Hill Rd. Continue for 4 miles. Turn right onto Tower Rd (gravel road). The parking area is on the left after 1.5 miles.

There are other options to get there. You can check Mapquest to see the best route for you.  It is approximately 1 hour and 30 minute drive from Colonie Center.  There is room for about 14 vehicles in the parking area at the trailhead.

***NOTICE*** If your plans change please change your rsvp in advance to give someone from the waiting list a fair chance to attend the event. Please be considerate in regards to your attendance and rsvp's.

Thank you!

A reminder: bring microspikes or trail crampons with you.... there is still ice and snow in the woods. We may even have a lot of run off with the temps in the 60's.

Bring waterproof rugged hiking boots, spikes, poles, lunch, snacks, water, proper hiking clothing (no cotton), sunglasses and if you have them a camera and binoculars.

Let me know if you have any questions.
