Hike to Dickinson Hill Fire Tower

A 3 mile round trip hike up the Fire Tower Trail to the recently restored Dickinson Hill Fire Tower.  We will meet at the parking lot at the end of North Long Pond Road.   The views from atop the Fire Tower show the Green Mountains, Berkshires, Taconic's and the Adirondack Ranges.

Brief portions of the trail are steep and rocky so wear appropriate hiking footwear.  The trail is largely uphill on the way there.  The round trip should take us about 2-3 hours.

The elevation at the Fire Tower is 1760 feet, with an ascent of 200 feet.  This would be considered a moderate difficulty level.

There is a picnic table at the Firetower site if you would like to bring a lunch.

Minimum age is 8 (8-15 yrs must have a participating adult with them, 16-17 yrs must have a parent/guardian sign participant agreement but do not need to attend)

•please be dressed for the weather, we will go rain or shine
•Dress in layers
•wear appropriate hiking footwear
•please bring water, snacks and any personal medicines you may need as well as sunscreen, rain gear, day pack.
•camera and/or binoculars if you have them

Directions:  Take Route 2 East to the Grafton Lakes State Park Winter Entrance (North Long Pond Road) follow to the end (approximately 1.5 miles).

Dorothy will have a black Jeep Liberty

If you have any trouble finding us, Dorothy's cell is 518- 641- 9660 and Betsy's is[masked] feel free to call or text.   Cell coverage is not reliable in this section of the park.

I think thats a great idea. It would be up to LLBean!

How about a "3 strikes and you're out" policy? Would that be a practical way to increase fairness for those who really want to go?

Excellent way to describe the problem. Thanks Joe.

I've been on dozens of hikes with LLBean over 2 or 3 years with some of the nicest folks ever. The leaders are fantastic. The weakest link in the system, however, is the reservation/wait-list and it's abuse. Despite reminders and pleas from the leaders, WAY too many people sign up, then cancel with the flimsiest of excuses or don't bother to notify at all and just fail to show up. SO discourteous. The LLBean staff (leaders) are bound by company rule --- and probably legally --- to not exceed the maximum allowable number of participants. There is no penalty, financial or otherwise, for correcting this discourtesy.

Anyway, more to your point: what to do? In my experience, not more than 1 in 10 hikes are completely full. If you are 1st or 2nd on the wait-list, show up anyway. You are only taking a small chance of being turned away. Besides, who's to stop you from doing an "independent" hike on these public trails which simply follows the official group. - Joe

Need to know best way to anticipate wait list. We only needed 1 spot, we were all ready to leave the house but saw there were no cancellations Saturday morning so we did not go. It turned out that there were 7 people who did not attend. In the future should we just head over and wait there or be respectful of the wait list and not go. Thanks. We are pretty new to the group so just wondering how to plan. Diane and Bill

May have a photo or two to upload, but haven't tried yet. This was a modest, fun hike with fun companions and leaders. Thanks, Dorothy and Betsy --- you arranged great weather!

Needed 2 spots but there was only one. Hope Ron on the wait list can go. Enjoy.

Put yourself on the wait list... you cannot add +1 once there is a wait list to a reservation. Check first thing in the morning to see if there are any cancellations... do not rely on getting an email. Go to the meetup site to check. If there are still people on the wait list you can make your decision then if you want to cancel.

Not looking good . We have to leave our house by 9 to get there. Irony will be once I cancel one of us out, the other will get in. Oh well. Timing is everything. Will give it 30 more minutes. Beautiful day! Enjoy the hike.

Dorothy, bill got in from the wait list, I tried to sign up separately or do +1 and it didn't record it. Is there room for me or should we skip it and give Bill's spot to someone else on the list?
