Hike Olana State Historic Site

OLANA STATE HISTORIC SITE

A stroll-like hike amid the grounds of Frederic Church’s Persian-style castle home and through the picturesque landscapes of pond, gardens, and woods created by this second-generation member of the Hudson River school of landscape painting. Olana’s carriage paths provide only a few miles of trail suitable for walking and cross-country skiing—but what miles! Although the ornate house itself (one of very few intact artists’ residences and workplaces in the country) attracts over 25,000 people a year, the trails seem to get little use. Because they are fairly flat, they make for easy winter walks and ski tours. It can be muddy in springtime and fall, when views of the river and the Catskill Mountains are at their best, though hardly as spectacular as in Church’s day, when he “cut” the forest to use scenery as a canvas to set against his own favorite points around Olana.

My mom fell election night, called me as she was on the floor for two hours trying to get up and to the phone. She went by ambulance to the hospital when I arrived. I couldn't lift her to a chair due to incredible back pain. We were told just abrasions and no breaks even though she was x-rayed. Sent home. Pain continued and worsened and yesterday morning she was taken again to the hospital after severe back pain. They gave her a Cat scan and she has TWO fractured vertebrae. How did they not catch this on the x-ray! She was on morpheme yesterday and again sent home to heal with patches and a script for hydrocodone which she refuses to take!
Can't go to Olana! She can't be left alone.

    Hi Karen/Betsy,
Is there any way we can talk another 'Host' perhaps Dorothy, into going and take two groups?? Just a thought???

    November 10, 2012

    • Karen

Hi Lisa, As much as we would love to see Dorothy and the rest of the waiting list join us on this hike, it is not to be. We need to think of the impact such a large group would have on the land, parking and noise. One of the seven principals of Leave No Trace is to prepare and plan ahead which includes hiking in small groups to reduce our impact. Looking forwrd to hiking with you on the 18th!
