Novices training

Let's meet at Spectrum Learning Centers in Burbank, CA for this session.

Please respond as to what time works best for you and we'll adjust the meeting

time as necessary.

This meetup is posted in response to the previously expressed interest by several members.

Please note: I'll be explaining all of the latest developments in Joomla's evolution this year.

We're up to 1.7 now and many new and exciting features have been added. By the time 2.5 (Formerly named 1.8 and scheduled for December of 2011) is released we'll have even more amazing features which will change the face of Joomla as you know it.

Here's the original post:

I am beginning to use Joomla and can do some things well and others I am totally inept with! I thought maybe one afternoon or evening a group of us beginners could sit informally with a pro and ask various things to help us learn. We could meet at a coffee house, my home or office, wherever. I need to know things like how to insert books to sell from Amazon, how to upload a Powerpoint presentation to name a few. BTW, I am also happy to pay a modest amount for someone to tutor me in one or more sittings!

Message Continued: Can anyone recommend a good database/inventory tracking/ sales transaction plugin that he can use? I have seen several, and some are good, but I would like to get a few recommendations from people who have used. Thanks

I am new to joomla, but since I know several web technologies, (HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript MySQL and graphics) joomla seems to be pretty easy. Nevertheless, going to meetups where features are demo'd would be of great value/timesaver. Although I'm not using joomla for my personal websites yet, I have clients that need technical support. I have a client that is selling collectible music records. You know those things they used to play on record players back in the dark ages. He wants a plugin.

I would like to see a meetup where some of us bottom level people could sit with our computers and ask questions to learn things. FOr example, I have a powerpoint presentation I want to put on my wepage but am clueless on how to do it. I have an Amazon sellers account, but am failing at being able to post books on my webpage. THis could be really cool to do in a clinic where members pay an expert to take each issue on one by one. Or, would be happy to pay someone to tuto me in a lunch session.

Wow, I just noticed that the last post for this meetup was Feb 18. Is anyone still interested in this meetup? Is anyone paying attention? I hope this meetup can continue.

I would sure like to go. I'll be coming from Riverside, which is 80 miles. It would be nice if you could bring the meetup a little eastward or southward. Nevertheless, you can count me in.

    I'll be there

I think we should have the meeting. If we keep changing plans this will create confusion.

Thanks Paul for setting this up, Joe for presenting and getting us on the right track. See everyone@ 1pm

    January 3, 2011

  • Paul F.

Hey! Ok, so I booked our free location. Does 1pm work? They close at 4pm so I didn't want to be pressed for time. Here are the details for our meet up:

    When:

    Sunday, 16th 1-3pm

    Where:

    Working Village
    212 Marine St
    Ste 100
    Santa Monica, CA 90405

    Does that work for everyone?

    January 3, 2011

  • Paul F.

So it looks like the Sunday's have it! What time on Sunday? And I will book it.

Happy Pre-New Year, most excellent Joomla develoers, or as in my case, wanna-be Joomla developers!

Joe - thank you so much for starting this group. Please choose a time and let the following 3 follow. I will arrange the location as soon as you give the word. I've been playing around with Joomla for a few weeks now and I desperately need a little guidance... like, where do you find the code? Or how can I even see the mysql database?

I know how to write a little code, but I can't find it!

    December 31, 2010

  • Paul F.

If we do it aferwork, how about 7-9pm. If sunday, anytime!

    December 30, 2010

  • Paul F.

Yes, please keep in mind that the free location I found is only for 2 hours. I think the sooner we pick a time the better, so this opportunity doesn't slip through the cracks.

    December 30, 2010

  • shaRon

That would be a great time for me as well.
Joe maybe pick 2 times and ask that everyone respond by next week so you can set your calender

Can we do a 4 hour Sunday day meeting, maybe 11 to 3... mid January?

    December 29, 2010

  • Paul F.

Yep. I am most certainly in also, so we have at least 3. Joe, my suggestion would be to pick a date and time.

RSVP's are not usually reliable, so let's just see who shows up. My guess is we get between 5-10.

This sounds really great, thanks Paul and Joe!
I am available on weekends, OR Mon, Thurs, Fri.
So count me as one if these times are good.

Team, just got a great opportunity for us. Someone from LinkedIn reached out and offered us a free location:

at 212 Marine off Main Street, www.workingvillage.com.

I have been in touch with the owner and she will hook us up with a projector and a room for at least 10 for FREE for two hours.

All we need to do is decide WHEN.

I am really looking forward to it. I just contacted the Santa Monica Main Library and inquired about meeting spaces. They have "study rooms" for free, or we can rent a space with a projector for 3 hours for $75.00 (+$100 deposit). This space accommodates 20-30 people. Here is the # to library administration for anyone who would like to call: (310)[masked]

It looks like we have 2 distinct areas of initial interest. can we offer 2 novices training sessions if needed?

    December 27, 2010

Thanks Paul, the Santa monica Library is a great place!

    December 27, 2010

    Yes! Santa Monica library?

I would like to see a westside meeting, there seems to be interest in the santa monica area. Hope everyone had a great holiday.

I am also interested. Also from santa monica

I'm in. Where will it be? I am in Santa Monica, just FYI.

    December 3, 2010

Sounds great. Let's pick a date for the next meeting!

    Steve,

Check out http://www.joomlashack.com and Joomla University. I balked at the idea of "paying to learn" but as I look back over the dozen or so sites I have built, It would have been sooooo much easier to have had that info up front.
