One of our members visited key landmarks of the civil rights movement throughout the South over the holidays providing the inspiration for our next Meetup.

February is also Black History Month, a good time to consider some of the historical consequences of prejudice, racism and xenophobia.

The Southern Poverty Law Center counted 1,002 active hate groups in the United States in 2010. And, the head of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, Wade Henderson, told reporters, "The election of Barack Obama as the first African-American U.S. president, the financial crisis and immigration have formed a lethal cocktail leading to a spike in hate crimes."

Join us for a day at MOT. The power in the history there is an experience you won't forget.

Monica, I hope you will share more about your trip with us. I'll find someplace to go after our visit that serves strong drinks.

Deanie, I would love to share my civil rights trip with you and the group. I can't wait to visit the MOT. I've tried to get there several times before, and am really looking forward to it... not because it's a pleasant subject, but like you said, an important one. Can't wait to visit Sotto afterwards, it looks divine.

I had a great time! I would love to go back and see the parts we missed.

As always, Deanie did a fantastic job of getting us organized. This was a very interesting tour and some thought provoking conversation over dinner. I really enjoyed this one in spite of the grim subject matter.

The experience of The Museum of Tolerance is very solitary. It was nice to be able to talk with other attendees, however briefly, while following the scripted route. I would have like to have more time to discuss the important issues this museum addresses. Sorry not to have been able to join the group for dinner.

The Museum was excellent, ditto the company.
