Henry, I think it's wonderful that you will organize our meetings. I'll look into a venue this week. Give me a date or two, as they always ask for when.

Thanks George. You know I was thinking, I know you wrote the play somewhat under the gun, so o speak, and Norm and I were thrown in cold with no real time to prep. In spite of that, we all pulled it off rather well and I think the audience genuinely LIKED what we did.

Hey, the playwright really liked it a LOT! :)

    David, Mary, Caroline and All,

Parts for tomorrows readings are rather few now we are not doing Laura's scene.

I'd like to suggest: David MacDowell Blue bring copies of your script to cast on the day. I can direct Pygmalion if necessary, or someone else may like to do it.

Mary bring copies of your Richard III scene to cast on the day - or Mary you could ask people you want to play in it in advance of course as you know many of those coming.

Caroline Kennedy: I think your play has too many male characters to get cast from this Sundays attendees, but if you fancy casting some women in male parts it may work out.

If anyone else has a 10 min max scene - bring copies and we may be able to do it - or you can cast for next time and hand out the copies.

We usually only have time for three performances, giving time at the beginning of the session for rehearsal, but we may be able to squeeze in 4. Total afternoon usually = 2.5 hours.

    August 24, 2013

    • Laura

Mark is the one who has an audition. Henry is coming and playing Henry Higgins. I agree with his comments above. I would add George should also bring copies of his play.

      August 24, 2013

    • David MacDowell B.

I've just uploaded a slightly shorter excerpt from CARMILLA. I'll be bringing some copies as well.

PDF version of my short play Broker is uploaded. Norm will be reading the role of Rick. If somebody is interested in playing the role of Snap, a male in his forties (you don't have to be that age, however), let me know. Also, require somebody to read action, either gender. Regarding the two latter, I will cast on Sunday if no takers beforehand. I'll be directing my work this time. Thanks, George

    Hello fellow Readers and Writers,
Am looking forward to tomorrows meet-up. I have my writer's group until 4 tomorrow so will be about 30 minutes late. But will be happy to fill in anywhere needed.

HI George I'd love to read your 50's male character in your 2 man piece--though I'd like to think I could pull off early 40's as well:)

The part of Rick is yours Norm. Thanks! Uploading a PDF now.

    Casting for Pygmalion:

    Director - David Blue
    Henry Higgins - Henry
    Eliza - Melissa
    Housekeeper - Caroline

An actor is needed to play The Gentleman/Colonel Pickering. There are also two small parts that can be combined with a narrator into a single role. Who is interested?

    August 19, 2013

    • Henry

The Pygmalion script is in under the "More" tab / "Files" at the top of the Meetup page. Yes we need someone for The Gentleman/Col Pickering (just one character). Otherwise, I edited it down so there are 3 rather small parts - a Mother, A Bystander and Freddie. There isn't much narration either. My suggestion is that we cast those on the day rather than asking someone to commit to these at this stage.

      3 · August 20, 2013

    • David MacDowell B.

So we need a new Higgins, right?

      August 24, 2013

  • George L

Ok, posted my short play BROKER. I've noted in the file section that I have an older version of Word, so formatting may be off. If I have time on Sat, I'll drop by my office and convert to PDF. The play is casting for 2 males. Anyone may read stage direction. I will bring copies for actors on Sunday. George

Does this mean some of us shouldn't come, since there won't be as much need for actors?

    August 19, 2013

    • Laura

We will be doing a third piece as well, probably August Osage County. Take a look at the two script segments, which are uploaded under More-Files up above. Another option is to do the opening scene of The Women, also uploaded.

      August 19, 2013

    • Mary

I will need actors if we do my scene

      August 19, 2013

I will post my short scene tonight. I need six people but can do it with fewer. Agage and gender d/n matter.

    August 19, 2013

  • George L

My short play "Broker" is a two character piece, casting for two males, mid-late fifties & early-mid forties. I'll try to get it posted no later than Thursday as I'm finishing it up. Moreover, in response to an earlier comment that I saw to our group (in general), I encourage everyone to attend, even if you are not reading a part, because we’re about having an audience just as much as we’re about performing a role.

So if WORLDLY POSSESSIONS is off the list, what other than PYGMALION will we be doing? Just FYI, my friend I'm bringing is very familiar with CARMILLA.

    August 18, 2013

    • Laura

I think we should do your play when you are available to be involved and since you're directing Pygmalion that means it doesn't work in August. September, here we come!

      1 · August 19, 2013

  • David MacDowell B.

Am I allowed to bring a friend? He's an actor in his sixties.

    1 · August 17, 2013

  • Laura

Cast for Worldly Possessions is Mary (playing Mema), Denise (playing Kate), Mark (playing Austin) and Barbara (playing Bonnie). Henry will direct. Still looking to cat Rose, Lewis and Gerald - please see uploaded cast descriptions for details.

    July 22, 2013

    • Laura

Caroline: I think you're in Pygmalion. David: Gerald or Lewis is yours - pick one! Michael Fitzgerald is playing Austin.

Worldly Possessions is off the list for Aug. 25.

Hi all! As it happens I just had a reading of a play this last weekend! I'm an actor as well as a writer and reviewer. I actually did some scenes from PYGMALION back in the 1980s, when I did Henry Higgins. That was back at the National Shakespeare Conservatory in NYC. Would love sometime to see if folks would like to read my play, CARMILLA.

Seeking a director of Pygmalion - any takers?

    1 · July 31, 2013

    • Laura

First you need to be familiar with the material. On the day of the reading, it involves working with the actors during a couple of runthroughs to get them ready. Then you sit with the audience to watch them do the reading.

      1 · July 31, 2013

    • David MacDowell B.

Well, I have directed Shaw before, and am quite familiar with PYGMALION. If there isn't someone else.

Laura, Mike Fitz here- I know I just joined the group and I'm a dog, but I'm a great actor, I've played Chuch in Hat Full of Rain and Curly in Of Mice and Men, and I've got a Brooklyn accent, so If you still need an Austin in August, just whistle...
