I came in via I64 to Story Ave to River Road @0715 and never even stopped until I parked. There was no congestion or blocked intersections. The Mayor's event drew 10k participants, up 2k over last year. It will continue to grow, especially when the Big Four bridge is fully accessible. Next year I'll be sure to be there at 0630.

coming from c-hill downs area, all roads were closed off from west to east! got BIG run around by traffic-control: could not get near! sorry to miss - but ended up putting in u river road at a park launch to play with the big boats! great day, though not with group.

Yeah the traffic was handled very poorly....I bet many people just got mad and went home...I don't blame them. I will let Dan Young (Mayor's Staff) know about all roads being blocked and kayakers could't get through to join us.

The Mayor's Hike Bike and Paddle was an amazing day, more people participating, over 10,000 in the entire event. It was a shame about the fish kill on Beargrass Creek. It is not normally like that. MSD is investigating what happened. The only problem with the creek this week was a huge water main break on Broadway and Beargrass. this dumped alot of chlorinated water into the creek. It is a sign that we need to be vigilant in the protection of the creek. there is no reason why Beargrass should not be as clean as Harrods or Floyds Fork. I would encourage readers to join the Beargrass Creek Alliance, and or write Mayor Fischer with a concern, and asking him to ensure that our public waterways are clean and inviting to recreational pursuits.

It's good to know it's not normal for the creek to be so unpleasant David.

    Beautiful Day to be kayaking.

We had an awesome time yesterday. Coming from Oldham, we took River Road early, put in at the Community Boat Dock early, and paddled down early to enjoy the festivities and free give aways. Got back in the water for the 10:00 paddle and really enjoyed the awesome day! Couldn't have been a prettier site paddling toward the city.

I agree with Catherine that I will pass on Beargrass Creek next time. Three times now and I just don't like paddling in there. Harrods and Floyd's Fork are cleaner/fresher.

It was a beautiful day on the river once we negotiated our way to the Community Boat Dock. Next time I will pass on Beargrass Creek though!

We were rerouted on our first attempt to get to the community boat dock but after that we were waved through to the closed roads because they saw the kayaks on the roof. We saw the mayor being interviewed after his paddle and Josh snuck his way into the background, lol :)

    Great morning on the water!!

Great day to be on the water!!! Getting there left something to be desired. Tried 4 different approaches, expecting to get to community boat house and then Waterfront Park. The real frustration was the lack of "knowledge/help" from the officers working the blocked intersections. Really appreciated the help getting my boat down to the launch site, would have been nice if they'd been there afterward. Regardless, beautiful day to be on the water.

River road was closed coming from Zorn avenue direction so I had to park downtown in green lot and launch from there. Hope to see everyone soon

Would this be okay for a beginner? I tried out two kayaks at the Quest Demo and loved it and didn't have any trouble getting around the lake then. Are people who are not volunteering still meeting at the Community Boathouse?

    May 26, 2013

    • David M. W.

This paddle course stays close to the Kentucky shoreline and then you paddle up Beargrass Creek and back. Many of the participants aren't long time boaters. So yes, this is okay for a beginner. Many kayakers who are not part of the experienced safety spotters do park and launch from the Community Boathouse.

My kayak is loaded on my car so I will be there today

I'm going to be down there by 10, I'll look for you guys. You will the large group of people floating on the river with plastic, metal and wooden watercraft, correct? See you there!

    1 · May 26, 2013

    • David M. W.

Yes, the paddle starts at 10am so we should all be in the water and paddling

      May 26, 2013

For those kayakers who are willing to be safety spotters we will have a safety meeting at the Community Boathouse at 8:45 a.m. The meeting will be brief and we will have some reflective safety vests. Anyone who wants to bring doughnuts/coffee/muffins etc will be given a very brief heroes hurrah and then we will proceed to gobble up all your food offerings.

We hope everyone can join Mayor Fischer - who is paddling a solo kayak, on the float/paddle on the Ohio River up past the Community Boat House and to Beargrass Creek and the MSD pumping station. Stop by the Community Boat House booth before you head out. Look forward to seeing everyone on May 27th.

where should I park and what is the best time to arrive?

      May 24, 2013

    • David M. W.

I would park at the Community Boathouse (River Road next to the UofL Women's Rowing Center) and get there no later than 9 a.m. If you are a safety spotter please arrive no later than 8:30 a.m.

      May 26, 2013

  • David M. W.

I spoke to Dan Young yesterday and he said the city has recreational insurance that covers all volunteers for these type events. So if you were concerned don't be and if you weren't then never mind....lol
I'll be at the Community Boathouse in the morning; Dan will bring a few radios and the reflective vests for those who are willing to be safety spotters. See all you boaters in the morning.

Many folks are putting in at the community boat house, it is less traffic, easier parking, - then the paddle down to the Waterfront - Please arrive at the waterfront by 10 am, so we can have a large crowd to paddle with the Mayor and celebrate the Mayors Hike bike and Paddle. - even better arrive early and visit the booths and or watch the rolling contest and kayak demonstrations. The community boat house will have a booth up on the lawn, stop by and visit. If you are putting in right at the waterfront under the interstate highway, be forewarned that river road there will be closed about 8 am, for a 1/2 an hour for a bike race. Check out the CJ article
