Overnight kayak camping on 18 Mile Island

We'll be camping out again on 18 Mile Island. The island is only about a mile from the boat ramp, so there's not a whole lot of paddling to do to get there. This is a great way to try out kayak camping just to make sure you bring all the right stuff, and that it all fits in your boat. And if it turns out you forgot something the boat ramp is just a short 10-15 minute paddle away. Once there we can hike around the island and paddle around. There are some old structures to check out on the island, and the narrow passage on the KY side of the island is a fairly scenic paddle. And if you just want to come out for the day and not camp that's great too. The actual time people arrive, and actual camping spots will kinda be up in the air. Last time we had people spread out along the beach, but within walking distance of the campfire. But the kayaks should be easy to spot. You can also call my cell to get an update as to where we are:[masked]-5705. Keep an eye on this page for any updates. Aprox camping spot:

What a cool location? A bit windy, and it always seemed that we were heading into the wind. Got to go up two of the nearby steams; very cool! I bet it was really cool overnite! Nice to meet everyone. Tnks for organizing the meetup.

It's going to be windy in the afternoon, and fairly cool tonight, so bring some warm cloths.

Ok. Glad that that is covered. Anyone else needing a boat, I have one for use. Probably won't tow. I'm thinking also of staying overnight on Sun....(don't have to be anywhere until Mon. afternoon). :)

Jim, I'll already be bringing a boat for Teresa. But you could tow your other boat behind you to avoid making two trips.

Looks like I will not be transporting Greg's canoe and that leaves room in the truck for the smaller rec. boat. Teresa, you're welcome to it.
I will be making two trips to get what I want on the island and will have room for additional gear on the second trip.

    Thanks Jim.

Greg, I will take the boat to Westport from where I'm staying (Charlestown, In.) if anyone wants to use it. No biggie.

I now own a canoe that can take two people and a ton of gear. Only problem is that I don't think I can get three kayaks and a canoe on my little Honda Civic. So if someone can help me get it there or some of the boats, that'll cover everyone.

I wish I had brought a camera for the rope swing, it was awesome! It's really high, you get really far out, and it was just a bit too cold to be doing it... but since when does that matter?

    April 6, 2010

  • Greg M.

Lisa, since Sara backed out you can use my boat she was going to. Teresa still needs a boat, and I'm guessing Jessi needs one too.

Teresa, there isn't anyplace close that rents canoes and kayaks. Your best bet is to borrow one. All of mine are spoken for, but we might be able to find you one, a few others are looking for one too.

There is a ramp that is not far from 18 on the In. side...Froggies?
I might check about launching from there...having moved to Charlestown.
I might have a rec. boat for a loaner too.
    More later.

Lisa, all of my boats are spoken for, but if someone backs out I'll let you have one of mine.

Eliz, you can get there from Duffy's but like Brian said, it's a LONG way. 15 miles to be more exact. There are two boat ramps on the Indiana side that might work in Owen and Sunset. But I've never launched from there, and the satellite pics don't show much parking space available. But if you want to launch from there and will be launching after we are, some of us can paddle over to meet you. I live in Indiana, and my plan is just to drive all the way to the Westport ramp.

Eliz -- its a long way from Duffy's.
Also, dont forget its Thunder Over Louisville and that area is pretty much the epicenter.

From Prospect on hwy.42 go about ten miles. Then take a left on hwy.524 this goes to the water about 4miles and watch your speed. Hope this helps. If anyone has any ?'s do not hesitate to ask.

    April 3, 2010

  • Brian K

Actually, looks like from wherever you are in Louisville you would just take 42, then a left on Westport and drive until you cant go any further.

Hey Mary - that is the one.
Click on Gregs 2nd link (Boat Ramp) that will load in Google Maps, Right-Click at the arrow and choose 'Directions to Here'.
Thats probably your best option. Not sure if anyone is so famillar with the area they can break down all the fine details as to what to look for. Hope this helps!

The average temps for april 17th are 68-41 degrees. The record temps for april 17th are 85-26 degrees. Dress accordingly and check local listings. Good luck and we're all counting on you.

I have a boat you can use, but it's not a touring boat and doesn't have room for a lot of stuff. So we might have to make two trips, but we'll get you and all your stuff to where it needs to be.

As far as what to bring, just whatever you would normally bring for a backpacking trip. The main things are tent, sleeping bag, water, food.

Something's not working with the camping spot link. When you click on it, Google Maps centers the field of view on the center of KY. But it does put a marker in the right spot. So if you zoom out and scroll to 18 Mile Island, you'll see a marker in the right spot.

Seems like we have enough people willing to skip the Thunder festivities. We can watch the fireworks from the island.

    March 26, 2010

  • Greg M.

Anastasia, I'll bring a boat for you.

    March 26, 2010

  • Greg M.

Note: Thunder Over Louisville is on the 17th too. So that might cause the plans to change if not many people want to go.
