"Flip A Coin Paddle" : 12 Mile Island/Party Cove/Harrods Creek

This Saturday come on out to the
Harrods Creek Boat Harbor by
9:00 AM. This is adjacent to the Captains Quarters restaurant off River Road in northeastern Jefferson County. This will be the put in for the first annual
"Flip A Coin" Paddle. Put in is $5.00/ kayak payable at the ramp. At 9 a.m. I will flip a coin to decide our destination, but because this is also our take out point, the coin thing is not a big deal, just weird. From the ramp we have three options:

  • 12 Mile Island tour; an eight mile round trip paddle, four miles up the Ohio River to the head of the Island. Explore it. Then four miles back. This can be a long paddle in very choppy waters. Be advised.

  • Party Cove; a two to three mile round trip paddle across the Ohio River to a cove with gravel beaches and powerboat parties. Due to the heavy powerboat traffic in this area water conditions while crossing the river can be very challenging.

  • Harrods Creek; a simple flat water paddle up the creek and back. Mileage depends. This is a no wake speed area, so slow your row brother.

This is a great opportunity to get out locally and see a part of this community in a way that most will never have the boatz (to do). So bring a lunch, sunscreen, beverages, and your sense of adventure. I paddle these areas regularly, close to home means more time on the water not the road.

Awoke early on Sat. morn...went...paddled from the ramp near CQ on Harrod's. around 12 mile, (with some stops), and back to the ramp for some supplies. Paddled over to the party cove near 6 mile and hung out a bit sitting head deep in the water on the shore and had a nice swim. Returned to the ramp and made to Cunningham's for some margaritas and grouper sticks. They were really good and Thanks Darrel. Traveled back to Charlestown, In. and put the boat back in at the Charlestown park ramp for some more roll/recovery work. Met a couple there from Indy and offered and they played with the Squamish some. Storm of Sat. evening came upon the park shortly before dark. Was sitting there out of the rain with the truck pulled down on the ramp and was thinking that the storm might pass....did for a little bit and then lightening struck big time right across the River! Time to go! Drove home listening to some blues, in the rain and low fog. Sweet.

,Fun day on the water....thanks Jason, Jim and Jonathan. Picked up some pointers, got comfortable in the new boat, paddled another...Jim's sweet deal on a Current Designs(oh by the way Jim - give you $400for the S)...you know, explored 12 mile island, tested myself and and kayak in choppy water with boat and wind adding to the flavor and all around great day. Plus a cool pop on the water topped off with a margarita or two at Cunningham's af ter the paddle. Nice!

My husband would also be coming and we have our own boats. The first or second option sounds good to us.
