The Louisville 50

  • Oct 4, 2014 · 6:00 AM

50 miles along the Ohio - Westport to West Point. so the whole thing, or just a section. this a challenge to all the paddlers out there. last year the fastest boat took just over 6 hours, while most of the finishers took between 10 and 12 hours. Check out the Louisville 50 face book page and make sure your friend us: https://www.facebook.com/TheLouisville50

Didn't participate for this, tho did last year.

Incredible conditions with the all day high winds and resulting waves.

Look forward to next year, and Thanks to all who put out a lot effort to put this gig on.

If I check in at Towhead Island at 10:00am would I be able to get through the locks at 12:00? Could I launch right away or would I have to wait until 11:00 to launch?

    October 3, 2014

    • David W.

You can launch when you want but the official time is 11. The lock through time I'd 12 noon.

Looking forward to the race/float tomorrow.
It is going to be cool 46 degrees when we start, then dropping to 44 before it starts to warm up, and winds from the west - currently they are predicting 14 mph with gusts up to 36 mph. Wind chill at 8 am might be 37 degrees. The stronger winds will be in the afternoon. the first half of the race - the mayors cup, looks great. but paddling on to west point everyone will be facing a strong head wind. Just as another note about the lock. there are two lock through times - 12 noon and 2 pm. You are welcome to carry around the lock. the boat ramp is to the right of the locks, then you have two choices, carry to the fisherman's access with steep steps and logs to crawl over or take the shorter route, right across the road. Yesterday, I trimmed the path so it is easy to see, just be careful about the stumps that I left, easy to trip. See everyone tomorrow.

I heard somewhere we could drop our kayaks off in Westport Friday night so they would be there Saturday morning when we arrived to check in. And that someone would be there with them. Is that true? And if we can drop them off Friday night what time?

    October 3, 2014

    • David W.

Chris, yes you can drop your boat off Friday night between 6 and 9 pm. there will be two volunteers to watch the boats.

Ok, quick question, suppose one does the 50 miles...is there a shuttle or some such to take us BACK to the starting point? I cannae exactly paddle back home.

    October 1, 2014

    • Robert H. B.

Ah scratch that, saw the information on the form. Which leaves another question if I may...anyone taking a shuttle back aftewards, I'd be glad to provide a share of the transportation costs if needs be.

      October 1, 2014

    • David W.

Robert, there is no formal shuttle provided. There are certainly several folks who will be driving back up, but you have to make your own arrangements.

I have created a simple survey to help plan the Louisville 50. pass the link around, it would be great to have all of the ideas in one place, so this can be an amazing weekend.
