Kayak Sunday afternoon from Falls of the Ohio State Park

I haven't done this before but I'm told this is a nice launch site when the Ohio river level is right. I confirmed with the Corps of Engineers that this weekend will be a good time with moderate current. Here's a link to a description: http://www.fallsoftheohio.org/clark_cabin.html

Based on the naturalist at Falls of the Ohio State Park we will probably launch from there, though we can look at the George Rogers Clark Park boat ramp too. The two sites are very close. My cell number is 608-2572. See you there!

Glad we didn't try the fossil beds today. Ohio River was lots of fun as it was with the wind whipping up the waves. Thanks, Jim, for organizing this and getting us outside on such a beautiful day!

On Friday I spoke with Brad, the naturalist at Falls of the Ohio State Park. His recommendation is to put in there at the park and paddle around the islands, eventually exiting downriver at the Clark Home site boat ramp. He said the current is pretty strong directly opposite the boat ramp and he would not advise putting in there. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts who has some experience kayaking at this location. Thanks.

Chuck, was that you and your son I saw there? You in a canoe? We didn't put in at the falls - went up to the Boat House at Towhead Island. It was choppy going from there to 2nd St Bridge and back. But we enjoyed it.

No, my wife and I were in blue and yellow kayaks.

Could not kayak from there - too much current

Slight change of location. Let's meet at the Falls of the Ohio State Park, where we will probably launch.

I'm new to kayaking. Do you recommend this for a first outing?

If you've kayaked some and can get back in your boat if it flips over, I would come to the event and make a judgment there. If not I would pass. You could still come to watch.

    Today's gage forecast for Sunday's lower gage is: flow 72.1 & Vol/current 2.1

Is it down and back or put in and take out downstream?

I guess we could do whatever we'd like. A shuttle would be fine by me, but right now I'm just planning to paddle around the area and return to that boat ramp.

This is a great trip when the water is right (and it sounds like it will be). I tried it once when the current was crazy and swamped my kayak.

I'm going to talk with the naturalist at Falls of the Ohio Park before we go. If you want to try to contact them it would be great. Thanks.
