A Private Residence in San Pedro
0000 Somewhere, San Pedro, CA
Price: $20.00/per person
Back in the swing, and I feel even more active and energetic!))
Our member Vin is generously offering his place in San Pedro for a cooking meetup and after the dinner we can go to a Swing dance class nearby.
We will cook what is called "Bento" - Japanese style lunch box. The description is at the end of this announcement.
Since San Pedro is far from most members, I wouldn't do this as a usual cooking class style. Rather, just like our past holiday cooking meetups, our Japanese member Maiko and I will start cooking, and other members who want to help to (or just watch us) cook can come whenever time they want to. If they don't want to see or participate in cooking, they can just come to eat dinner at 5pm.
The Swing dance class is for all levels and for beginners it starts at 7pm. The first hour is a lesson and afterwards people can just dance away until midnight!

Thank you very much, Vin, for inviting us to host this fun meetup!
See you there,
At the Cafe Sevilla meetup in Long Beach in April, I met a new member Vin for the first time, and we really enjoyed our conversation over good food. He told me about his passion for food and also learning German language, culture. He also loves to dance. Well, I'm very clumsy when it comes to dancing, but when he showed me how easy for women to dance as we just need to follow the lead, I thought, "hmm.... maybe I can give it a try one day??"
Combining two of his passions, he encouraged me to plan a cooking meetup at his house before going to the dance class. I've asked several potential instructors, but none was able to make it, so I needed to come up with something myself.
A little note on bento-making: I think it started around 5 years ago, but it's been really escalating! These days Japanese mothers have gotten very much carried away putting cute faces and neat designs to create what is called "Kyara-ben" literally translated as "character bento"... At first I really didn't care for the new fad - my initial attitude was that they should spend more time on actual cooking than on decorating. I usually like to cook everything from scratch, and I hate to use frozen or semi-processed food.
Members have asked me to show how to make Kyara-ben, but I'd been reluctant.
However, when I saw the attached photo I just changed my mind. I think it's easy enough to make and it'll be sure to put a smile on kids' face.
The photo shows a snowman rice balls with imitation crab and boiled Komatsuna scarf, carrot nose and star, nori (seaweed) cutout eyes and mouth, and tamago-yaki (Japanese omelette) and pork rolls stuffed with vegetables. Snowman rice balls for sure, but other items might be changed.
