80 Bites and Sips Around the World

  • May 4, 2013 · 6:00 PM

Hi Girls,

This is your opportunity to show off your heritage or your favorite country's cuisine in our own "20-something Ladies Los Angeles Food Festival." :)

This will be a traditional sit-down dinner with all 16 participants acting as host for a while. You will represent your country (you do not have to be originally from there, but of course it’s nice if you have experience making that food…).

Katie is hosting it in the valley, and address will be sent to confirmed RSVPs beforehand.

Because this event requires more cooking and more effort than usual, we ask that you only RSVP after (1) having read the full description completely, (2) made sure that you are free that Saturday and will not have a last-minute conflict come up.

Please put your chosen country in your RSVP, so we do not have two girls picking the same one. Home cooking would be nice, afterall we can all order takeout, but what's the point of that? Choose a cuisine you are familiar with and you can prepare.

Our theme is 80 bites and sips around the world, so the concept is that everyone prepares 5 things from her country (16x5=80, hence 80 bites and sips...)for all others to try: one appetizer, one main dish, one dessert item, one non-alcoholic drink item and one alcoholic drink item, giving everyone a little culinary tour. (You can modify this “formula” if a particular item is more common in your country, or if you’d like to make two different entres but no appetizer, etc.) We should focus on dishes that are typical for our chosen country and keep the portions small to make sure we don’t burst open by #12…

Please bring your food in ready to serve in their appropriate bowls / pots / pans, as we may not all be able to heat up our food at Katie’s.

A few other things we could do to make it more interesting for everyone:

-bringing some decoration or other item, maybe a book to show us something that relates to your country's cuisine, or culture
-wear something representing your country: e.g. folk clothes, the flag, even a jersey with your country’s team…
-bringing some music to enjoy during your portion of the evening, something traditional or modern and currently popular
-bringing a mini "menu" so we can remember what we had or maybe even recipes so we can make our favorites later would be awesome.

To give you an idea of how this will go, let’s say I’m representing Hungary (which I plan to do.) When it is my turn, I will set up the table, serve my appetizers and non-alcoholic drink to all of you girls, tell you a bit about my connection to Hungary and maybe about the culture, then serve my main dish to you with wine, tells you girls about the food, why it's popular, what is it called, what is it made of, etc, then serve your dessert... and clean off the table. Next, Ms. China sets up... and on we go.

If this sounds like fun to you, sign up and let us know what country you’re introducing. This will be so great!

Hey Stefanie and Barbara! Burbank is about 11 miles from "LA"... When you read my description and saw that this event would be held in "the valley", where exactly did you think this would take place? I'm just wondering, because most other cities in the valley are much farther than 11 miles away... You are both new to the group so you may not know this, but I always ask that you read the description carefully before RSVPing, and then decide whether you can make it to that area, so you don't have to cancel for reasons like this on the day of the event. Most of the girls are preparing things for the number of attendees on the list, so when we have girls pull out in the last minute, it throws off their plans... Not cool! Please keep that in mind for the future. Thanks and I hope to meet both of you at an event soon. :)

i realized that since most dishes will have "meat" this prob isnt the best one for me to go to. so I'll let other girls have the opportunity! But I'd def. be interested in maybe hosting a "veg" one for others or those wanting to try veg dishes! :)

    April 14, 2013

    • Nanda D.

I know... Sorry. :-( But a veggie potluck / mixer would be fun! Let me know if you want to do it! :)

Yes! Thai food, Japanese food, Indian food. They have several vegetarian dishes. I don't eat meat either. Just if I REaLly must. But would NeVer eat red meat EVer!

      April 13, 2013

    • Nanda D.

Yeah, it's going to be difficult for you girls, because I'm pretty sure most of us will make meat dishes... Hungarian food is pretty much meat with meat with meat on the side... Of course you don't have to eat anything, but I know my food will be all red meat because that's all we eat... And chicken, but I don't want to make the boring stuff, I want to "dazzle" the group with the fabulous Magyar (Hungarian) cuisine. But I know your dilemma. I was a vegetarian for 8 years, and an international potluck would have meant grazing on the side dishes of most countries... :( Barbara, Thai food has lots of veggie options, Thai salad, pad Thai with tofu, veggie curries, desserts, etc, so that should be easy. Sarah, maybe you could pick a country known for vegetarian cooking - that's definitely not the US, lol. How about Indian food? Or Lebanese? Greek? Ethiopians also have tons of veggie dishes..?
