Jewelry making: learn to make earrings and wire wrapped pendants!

  • Jan 26, 2013 · 11:00 AM

Hi Girls!

I went to a basic wire wrapped jewelry course and learned the basics... And I have been obsessed with it since because it's so easy and so much fun! You can make the cutest little pieces in no time and with very little effort! I would love to teach you ladies how to make some simple things and if you like it, you can pursue it further or we can even have other jewelry making events... But for now, baby steps! This is jewelry making 101 - yours for free! :)

I will show you what to do step by step.

No experience necessary.

These projects are so easy, you can make all three of them in two hours, I promise.

We will all make the same things, unless someone would like to bring her own supplies and opts to use those. I recommend that for those of you who have some experience.

You will learn how to make jewelry to match your outfits or your mood. So much fun!

We will make the following:

- cute colorful wire wrapped bead earrings - this first pair will be our practice piece so we will keep it simple but nonetheless it will be beautiful and totally wearable!

-another cute pair of earrings with matching pendant - we will make this all from scratch, unlike the one above! :)

-a pretty pearl earring with matching pearl pendant or ring- so elegant and so easy, you will love it!

NOTE: the photos above are just samples of the type of things we will make, not the exact same ones (obviously, since there are 3 photos for each! lol), though I have a good idea for all 3 of our projects, I have made them before and I know they are easy and cute, so we will do those and have a nice variety of styles ranging from classic to modern. Yay!

Please either buy and bring all the supplies listed below OR let me know if you want me to buy everything and you can pay me at the event (but know for 100% sure that you will show up!!!) It is probably easier and cheaper to buy everything at once because a lot of these supplies, e.g. beads come in larger packages than what you need, but if you already have everything, feel free to bring it.

We will need the following tools:

-a round nose plier

-a chain nose plier aka flat nose plier

-a basic side cutter

-a bead board (and a mat if you'd like to get one)

Very important: you need the above tools to be made for jewelry making, not for hardware stuff /"men crafts" or general crafts. Jewelry making pliers are smaller than the kind of pliers men use for fixing stuff around the house, so do not borrow one from the bf / hubby and do not buy them in a hardware store either.

You don't need fancy ones, just basic full-size tools. Don't get the mini ones either if you don't want to be in pain, those will make your wrists hurt in two minutes...

If you want me to buy yours, I will get the basic starter kit for about $15-$17 at Michael's or Joann's. Otherwise the above items usually cost between $5-$10 each or $15-$25 in a kit... And they can last for years. I'd say if you think you will never do this again, get the $5 ones, but if you think that you may want to make jewelry again in the future, get the $10+ ones or the $25 kit... I bought mid-range ones and so far they've been great... I'm probably going to buy the fancy ergonomic handle kit soon though, because those put less stress on your hands. Alright, enough about the tools, onto the fun stuff!

For the projects we are making we will need:

-4 basic ear wires in silver color (real silver, or silver colored, you decide)

-2 basic ear wires in gold color (see above note)

-12 head pins in silver color (sterling silver or silver plated copper or... your choice)

-3 head pins in gold color

-3 eye pins in gold color

-8 silver colored 4mm jump rings

-20 gold colored 4mm jump rings

-5 large 12 mm+ round beads in a design you like

-4 small round crystal beads in the color of your choice

-8 small bicones in a matching color

-12 seed beads in a matching color

-3 large pearls in the color of your choice (can be fake pearls of course)

-4 smaller pearls in matching color

-2 beaded solid ring spacers

-3 bead caps

-1 ft of 26 to 32 gauge silver (plated) artistic wire, copper (softer or thinner is easier to work with and the higher the number the thinner it is)

-1 ft of 26-32 gauge golden colored (permanently died) wire

The above is subject to change but nothing major will be changed, maybe one or two items if I find that I missed something (it's a long list to remember! lol)

I would say if you want me to buy everything, count on it being a total of $25-$30 for tools and supplies. I will buy larger quantity of the supplies so it will be cheaper and we can share the content of each bag, e.g. headpins are sold in large bags of 144 too, so we can get that instead of getting tiny packs of 12, etc. If you buy it on your own, expect to spend about $45-$50 but you will have leftovers of certain things, so you can use them to make more stuff on your own. Either way, let me know your plans at the time of RSVP.

Let's plan to arrive at 11, start the crafts by 11:30 and that way we can wear our first piece of jewelry by noon. Woo-hoo!

See you ladies soon!

Nanda

Updates: this meetup is now full, please join the waiting list if you would like to attend. We may be able to squeeze in one or two more and someone may also cancel...

Also, I am buying everyone's kit, because that was the majority's preference and it seems easier. Please make sure to come if you say you will... Thanks.

I'm sorry I'm not able to attend anymore. Hopefully I've cancelled early enough for someone else to fill in my spot!

I sent you 4 emails about this. I spent $23 on your supplies. If nobody can take your spot, hopefully you understand that you are to pay for that. Same for the other girl I sent 4 email to and she canceled AFTER making me buy her stuff. Have some decency girls, this Chisholm, irresponsible stuff is getting old. I'm pissed that you girls think it's okay to make someone waste her time emailing you over and over, run around buying stuff for you a d then leave her stuck with the bill.

I set the limit at 5 (+me) because of seating issues, but if some of you ladies are okay with sitting on the floor around 2 coffee tables (I have a fluffy rug and pillows!), we can squeeze in at least 2 more girls. Let me know.

Also, I noticed the event title is "Jewelry Making Night..." but everyone should keep in mind the event starts 11am.

Hi Nanda, I'm down for using the floor! BTW, when I can't find "2 beaded solid ring pacers" online. Did you mean spacers?

    January 5, 2013

    • Nanda D.

Yes. But sent you an email about the projects too.
