Born at the San Gabriel Mission in 1801, and passing away in Los Angeles 1894, Pío de Jesus Pico IV, among other things, was twice governor of Alta California while under Mexico, and built and owned the Pico House (Main St - downtown LA) at the time, the most extravagant and lavish hotel in Southern California. In 1848, he began buying acres of land in Whittier, which he named El Ranchito, the little ranch. Around 1853, Pico built an adobe ranch house near the San Gabriel River, one of southern California’s few remaining 19th century adobe structures still standing.
Julie, a docent at the Pio Pico State Historical Park will provide a free, personal tour of the home and the grounds for our meetup group, on Saturday, March 23, at 11:am. The tour will last about an hour. We will meet at the front of the house.
