Personal Tour of the Pio Pico State Historical Park

Born at the San Gabriel Mission in 1801, and passing away in Los Angeles 1894, Pío de Jesus Pico IV, among other things, was twice governor of Alta California while under Mexico, and built and owned the Pico House (Main St - downtown LA) at the time, the most extravagant and lavish hotel in Southern California. In 1848, he began buying acres of land in Whittier, which he named El Ranchito, the little ranch. Around 1853, Pico built an adobe ranch house near the San Gabriel River, one of southern California’s few remaining 19th century adobe structures still standing.
Julie, a docent at the Pio Pico State Historical Park will provide a free, personal tour of the home and the grounds for our meetup group, on Saturday, March 23, at 11:am. The tour will last about an hour. We will meet at the front of the house.
If you have never been here..now's your chance!

Hope to see you there!

I really enjoyed myself and all the information regarding Pio Pico.

Had a great time. Never been to Whittier before. It's wonderful that they've managed to preserve this site. Nice friendly people too (this was my first meet up with this group). After the meet up I drove to the historic downtown Whittier area and found a great used bookstore where I picked up a couple of books on CA history.

HI Rudy, guess I missed it then. Is there a quick way to find those pics? I get corn-fused here on this website.

I didn't go through the entire store this trip so I'll have to go back. In just a few minutes I had a stack and was afraid if I lingered too long, I'd have more than I could carry.

    Hi,

Did I miss it or are we still waiting for the group shot to be posted?

Hi, Karen! I posted two of the three group shots that Julie, our guide, took of us.

Great to learn more about Pio Pico. It is a beautiful park so close to home! Thanks for letting me tag along.

My first meet-up and it was a very good experience. Julie was a very knowledgeable tour guide and, having just finished a bio of Pio Pico, I found the tour quite interesting. I know this isn't a foodie group, but my friend and I went to a truly great Mexican restaurant in downtown Whittier afterwards, Bizarra Capital, 12706 Philadelphia. Highly recommended.

Due to a change of plans, I was unable to attend this meetup (I was at the Pico ranch at last year's meetup) but glad to read some good comments. See you at the city hall meetup for sure!

That was a lovely day. Thanks. Sorry we were a bit tardy and didn't get to chat beforehand.

The tour was very personal, our guide extremely knowledgable, even about teeny trivia items. I have been driving past the sign on the 605 freeway for many years. It was great to visit.

I apologize for missing this event but unfortunately the battle I was fighting against my cold was lost and I woke up congested and unable to function. I hope everyone enjoys the tour.

Anyone coming from NELA, Downtown, or Glendale who wants to carpool? I have room for three more in my car, or happy to ride in yours and share gas.

Hi, Julie! Thank you for your offer to offer a ride down to Pio Pico State Historic Park. I would like a ride, if you still have room. I live in Elysian Valley.

Just to clarify - There is no entrance fee to the park or the home & parking is free. We are doing a "guided" tour with a docent, but anyone is free to take a self-guided tour of the home & grounds anytime during opening hours.

Thank you! I've been wanting to go inside the house.

    March 11, 2013

  • Rudy

Yes..bring along guests! I don't want to place a ceiling limit on this meetup, should that discourage anyone from attending, because it's a state park - supported by your taxes. It's for you! I'd suggest bringing along a cooler bag with your lunch to enjoy on the grounds afterwards. If your curious what the grounds look like, click on the "Photos" tab above & look for the photos of the meetup we had there last year.

I'm gone but trying to get others to come . It is perfect for members of La Senora Research Institute. Francisco Reyes had the Spanish Land Grant that the San Fernando Mission sits on. Pio Pico took over that property when missions secularized.

The grounds provide a restroom and tables in a shaded area should you decide to have lunch on the grounds. Parking is free.
