The Culver City Democratic Club Presents a Free Screening of The Healthcare Movie and Discussion with Dr. Bill Honigman of Progressive Democrats of America

This fascinating, 65-minute documentary, narrated by Kiefer Sutherland, tells the real story of how the health care system in Canada turned out so different from that in the United States.

Learn -

  • How it originated
  • How it works for ordinary Canadians
  • How it is paid for
  • How it compares to our American system.

After the movie, join Dr. Bill Honigman in a discussion of the true costs of "American Exceptionalism" in health care & California's potential to lead the nation in implementing truly sustainable reform.

"Dr. Bill" has been a full time ER physician in Orange County for over 25 years. He is a dedicated husband and father of two grown sons as well as a political activist on issues of economic and social justice.

To continue my response, since both the Democratic and Republican parties are beholden to corporations in America, and not to its citizens, a mass movement for a single payer plan would mean organizing demonstrations at the homes of every state legislator, taking over the state capitol and staging a sit-in, getting the media to publicize a list of all the state legislators who take money from health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, getting doctors to pay for a public relations firm to blitz every family in each state with information about a single payer plan, etc. Significant gains for the 99% under capitalism have never made from the top down...they have always been made from the bottom up!

I am a physician assistant at the VA and a documentary filmmaker. "The Healthcare Movie" was very superficial. Health insurance and pharmaceutical companies are some of the largest groups of lobbyists in Congress. Obama met with the major health insurance CEO's at the White House prior to his announcement of his Health Care bill so they helped write it! Obamacare is a boon for the health insurance companies as it will lead to millions of more people getting coverage via private insurance companies. While people with pre-existing health conditions can no longer be refused health insurance, the insurance companies just raise their rates for these people. I don't think that single payer health care can ever be passed by Congress, but it could possibly be passed on a state by state basis in the future, but it would take a mass movement in the streets in each state to fight for this.

I have friends from Canada, Europe, the UK. All of them are shocked at our healthcare system. None of them have any real complaints about their health care systems. When I have traveled and when my Republican father traveled all over the world, we both asked people about health care. Even my conservative father knows that single payer health care is the only way to go. I think it's important to let people know the truth and help spread the word.

The film was too long and too slow. It spent too much time extolling the CAnadian system and not enough time comparing it the American system. Also, it just touched on the profits made by US insurance companies. Dr. Bill did a better job of making the film's points than the film did. Re-edit it before sending it out there. In this case, less will be more.

The beginning of the movie tries to make the case that the insurance companies and corporations are to blame for the crisis in American healthcare but it makes no concrete connection to illustrate the point. The rest is a commercial for how great the Canadian system is with little contrary opinion (there is a rise of concierge care in Canada). I agree the US has massive healthcare problems but at this moment in time our Gov't is the single most fiscally irresponsible entity in human history; the thought of giving it more money to waste is crazy, especially where our lives are concerned. Like many, I would vote for a single-payer system if one could be structured to be free of political gimmicks, guaranteed quality, speedy care and could be purchased for a reasonable amount......with our current system of Gov't this will never be possible.

If you're a progressive, you'll want to see this, especially if you don't know much about the Canadian Healthcare system and how it contrasts with the American non-system. Dr. Bill was a great presenter. I enjoyed the screening.
