Meetup of the Year - The Gathering of LARPs 2012

The Gathering of LARPs is a yearly multi-LARP event and get together for all LARPs in the Southern Californian region. It's purpose is to create a free event that brings together the various LARPs and the people that play them.

In addition, it is the designed for people on this Meetup Group who have not tried LARP before to attend a free event that will give them the ability to sample the LARP games in the region.

We are looking for additional sponsors. If you wish to be a listed Sponsor, please contact us!

We are inviting and encouraging all LARPs in the Southern California area to attend and showcase their LARP games. This will be an opportunity to come out and meet other groups and the local LARP community. We will have an information booth set up so that in case your LARP cannot attend you can get the word out there about your game and events.

Bring your old garb or gear and sell it at the Auction (individuals will be allowed to sell their own items at auction and keep the proceeds), sew up some costumes and set up a vendor booth, or prepare and run a mod to showcase your game! Talk shop with other LARPers or game organizers, and plan for growth into the next year!

Current Vendors

* Iron Liege

* Bane's Armory

We are now accepting mods or demos for your game. If you are considering running one, please send it in via email to [masked]. With only a single day to run this, there will be some limits on how many mods may run. First come, first serve. The Fighter's Guild of the LARP Alliance will provide support in terms of weapons and NPCs to assist in the running of such mods. We are looking at 2 hour slots; with two tracks (of two different styles) maximum. We prefer not to run events that are similar next to each other, and encourage those that attend to play games that they aren't used to. It's a great way of learning how all-encompassing our hobby can be.

Food will be provided for free, but donations will keep this going. Anyone wishing to contribute to the food being provided, please contact us. Anyone wishing a change it what we've offered for this past event, please send that information our way. I was thinking more of the pulled pork sandwiches, BBQ chicken, baked beans, and corn on the cob!

We will be running raffles ($1, $3, $5 - depending on item value), and the auction to additionally support the Gathering. We will have several weapons and other equipment we are donating to this. If you are interested in donating to the raffles,please contact us.
We'd like to see a stronger showing of LARP booths to identify and promote each individual game here in SoCal. We have the five Live Effects Campaigns, Twin Mask, Dying Kingdoms, Empty Thrones, the Song of Evermore, (yes, that really is 10 Live Combat Campaigns) and another couple of games being planned to run in 2013. With so much LARP saturation, we really need to stand together as a community to support each other.

We are also accepting donations towards

* a Food Drive for the non profit group "Swords4Kids", organized by Jason Lord Black

* operating funds for the LARP Alliance, a non profit advocacy group for the LARP hobby

If you are interested in helping directly by being a co-organizer or staff for the event, send me an email.

Current staff is

Rick McCoy
Chris Hodges
Ramsey Rickabaugh
Anastasia Nagel
(and the awesome folks behind the Battle for the Ring!)

If you are new to all this, or LARP in general, this is probably the best way to get information - from the different genres and styles of LARPs that will be attending directly!

It will be held at Huntington Beach Central park - Library side of the park, same place.

    Hey Joe,

    There are a number of kids who come regularly including my two teen daughters (15 & 13). I can't speak for other LARP's but ROC tries to be very kid-friendly.

    Is this kid friendly? Anyone else taking their children?

    After clearing with Rick, I invited a USC journalism student to attend the Gathering.

    She's doing a class assignment on larp. She already interviewed me on Saturday. I told her (repeatedly) about some larpers' avoidance of media, and she's prepared for it. You can be on camera or not. You will have to sign a release form if you are going to be on camera. It's an "opt-in" situation, not opt-out. I trust that she'll be doing a positive piece, similar to the one Aaron Schrank made: http://www.neontommy.com/news/2012/02/pretenders-grown-larpers-redefine-playtime
