Open Lab + Quadcopters

  • August 26, 2012 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

OPEN LAB (ground floor) is ALL Projects of any scale. We will break into small groups and anyone interested in doing their own thing or would like to create their own conversation group, feel free to do so. We will have space for the NAO developers and the Quadrotor builders, as well as access to soldering irons, tools, drill press, rapid prototyping machines, etc. Bring your laptop; there's Wi-Fi!

QUADCOPTER (3rd Floor) will be a continuation of Quadcopter planning and building that will be led by John and Simon.

We will be answering all sorts of questions and sharing advice on how to build and the best resources to get parts from all over the web and in stores locally. We will have a small group meeting at least once or twice a month dedicated to building nearly all small aircraft, including blimps and jets!

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

We are really excited about the explosive growth of our club recently! Due to the overwhelming popularity and limited space, we are now limiting RSVPs to 80 until further notice. Please consider this when you RSVP, and make sure you add the number of guests in your party. In addition, if your plans change, please update your RSVP here on Meetup to allow others to take your space.

Hi, does anyone know of the quickest and cheapest way to come from Lake Forest (92630) to the meetup place? One way I can think of is taking a train from Irvine Metrolink Station to Norwalk and a bus from there, but still that's 2.5 hours one way. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Oh! Which train would this be? Metrolink doesn't seem to have any connection to El Segundo, I looked up their schedules.

If anyone wants to bring their Ard-bot robots from the robot build class I'll be working on bumper switches and random wondering code.

I'm thinking about giving a presentation on making conductive and insulating dough for soft circuits. Anybody interested?

Are you still planning to do this? We are interested in attending.

I'm interested. I find the whole fabric embedded / soft circuits / wearable computing thing of interest.

I have unfortunately been swamped with paid projects this past couple of weeks and still have to make a mount for it. We just received the DJI parts and can start assembly if people are interested. We can otherwise schedule a class for next weekend.

Simon, Are you on track to demo your smartphone quadcopter kit at this next meeting?

    August 24, 2012

  • Simon N.

I just received the pricing breakdown from HobbyKing and it is only around a 3% discount! I therefore recommend that you purchase batteries, chargers and receiver/transmitters from them directly. (I ordered a couple of extra batteries/charger for a complete kit) There are also many other online dealers that will have these in stock and offer better shipping options.

    August 21, 2012

    • Dave

      Which systems do you recommend?

I will post the links on shop.blackda.com later today under quadcopters 101, with links and description! So check it tomorrow

One more thing! We will be approved to carry anything Hobby King has at a discount. I assume batteries and chargers is a no brainer, but would you guys want transmitter and receivers as well? We will probably make a list on Sunday, since we can't carry a ton of inventory (we are not doing this to make a profit and so I have limited us to $2000 worth of inventory)

Yes TX/RX purchase option would be helpful. BTW are you going to continue to use DX6i as your TX even though it does not support telemetry option unless you get an add-on such as this one?

Or if have iOS device Spektrum is selling this but they all cost additional plus one more things to get lug around (and lose)...

I will be attaching my iphone directly on the quad and sending the image/video to my iPad. I hope to be able to demonstrate this Sunday or for sure the following meeting.

BTW Simon since the club is using Quadrino Multiwii Controller V1E (Gen 2) as the flight controller instead of Naza, just FYI there is a bad batch recall on it by the manufacturer.

Yes, I unfortunately had a bad board, but they replaced it right away. I talked to the owner, but it was replaced and there is no longer an issue for new orders. My new board works really well. Check out my latest flight: http://www.youtube.co...

Wow, your QC went really high. Camera quality isn't that bad either.

      August 20, 2012

Those are the major components. The others would be a BEC depending on battery. We are trying to get a deal on batteries, charger, transmitter and receiver as well. We will be start an assembly/setup class in 3 weeks of the DJI F450 - Quadrino combo.

Thanks Simon not only you fixed the earlier coupon code problem, I also see the removal of El Segundo tax of 8.75% with the new 7.25% sales tax. Just want to make sure this is right since even in OC our sales tax is 7.75%...

      August 20, 2012

    • Simon N.

Thanks for the feedback. We will try implement a permanent fix for calculating sales tax tomorrow, but for now just make sure that the shipping address is "225 California Street, El Segundo, CA 90245" Thanks

      August 20, 2012

  • Simon N.

I am sure we will make a more official announcement, when the site is more polished, but you can now order Quadcoperts from shop.blackda.com and LA Robotics Club members receive a 20% discount with this coupon "LAROBOTICS". It would be great if we can get some orders in over the weekend so I can order the parts for next Sunday! (We are only doing in store pick-up at this moment.) Let me know if you run into any issues. More parts coming soon.

So if we got the DJI F450 Quad ARF Kit + Quadrino kit, what else would we need besides a radio controller, batteries and a charger?

      August 17, 2012

  • Ryan S.

Hi, I'm new to the group and might be able to go to this one. How does this work? Are their going to be tools, supplies, etc? Do I need to bring my own?

    August 17, 2012

    • Simon N.

You do not have to bring your own tools the first time you come, but it would be a good idea to get your own tools eventually. Just bring yourself and curiosity

      August 17, 2012

  • Simon N.

I am trying to set us up with Hyperion(batteries) and a transmitter too. The application has been submitted, but awaiting approval. I hope that we can get deals on everything soon.

    August 16, 2012

  • Simon N.

Hi Dave and all other members. BLACK (host of LA Robotics Club) has been granted dealer status and will be able to offer all members a 20% discount on DJI products and quadrino controllers. It will take me a couple of days to set up the shop, but I will be sure to announce it here.
We will also have assembly classes for the DJI-quadrino combo starting maybe already next Sunday.

Thanks Simon on taking the lead on this. Does this mean we still need to procure our own battery, charger, and TX/RX since that was not mentioned in the discount list?

      August 16, 2012

    • Dave

Thanks Simon for arranging this. What is the discount list that Andy is referring to?

Hi Dave I was doing the exact shopping list and note that your $25 IMAX B6 link does NOT include power supply adapter.

And also the Z22003S-30 Combo Battery $20 has a -8 stock right now. And are you sure the JST-XH plug would work is the right type instead of Deans connector?

What about using the PX4FMU to replace the Ardupilot? More processing power for less money but probably more complicated to integrate with peripherals than Arduino which has lots of documented examples and low cost peripherals.

    PX4FMU Autopilot / Flight Management Unit $149
