Mark Wolfstone suggested using a laser to power the quadrotor for a longer flight. About 7 years ago NASA borrowed a laser from someone and manually targeted around 18 solar cells on a simple solar powered glider for I believe 36 hours in a hanger at Edwards AFB. I've tried to get a citation or report on this but cannot find it on the internet. So it can work but the quadrotor needs to send a signal to help target the laser or the laser needs a camera for visual recognition software.
