Amerivespa 2013, San Diego: All Scooter Rally!

  • Jun 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM

For the first time in a decade, the country's largest annual scooter event, Amerivespa, is coming to Southern California. The SoCal scooter community is very excited about Amerivespa 2013, which will be held June 27-30 in San Diego. The main lodging (with discounted price) will be the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center. Despite the name, THIS RALLY IS OPEN TO ALL MAKES AND MODELS OF SCOOTERS!

Amerivespa is four days of scooter riding, events and entertainment, a big banquet, a concourse, and a gymkhana (games and competitions). This year's rally in Lake Geneva, WI, drew over 600 registrants. 2013 will likely be bigger. Past Amerivespas have had rides as large as 230+ scooters. This year, we had over 600 on a ride! (They're not all that big and there will be several riding options each day.)

The San Diego area offers some of the best roads in the country, with coastal views, sweeping mountain roads, and a hilly city packed with charming neighborhoods. The local scooter clubs are planning some amazing rides and events, including a run to Mexico.

PLEASE ONLY RSVP "YES" IF YOU INTEND (OR HOPE) TO RIDE TO SAN DIEGO WITH US.

Not riding with us but want to discuss the rally and make plans? Looking for someone to split a room in San Diego? Looking for someone with trailer space to haul your scooter or to split the cost of renting a truck? You can comment on this page (even if you RSVP "No") or on our Discussion Thread about this rally. Also check out the Amerivespa Facebook and ModernVespa, ModernBuddy and other forum threads (links at bottom of this post).

Ride to Amerivespa:

Ride to San Diego Thursday, 6/27 along the coastal route. This route is long but not particularly challenging.

Because all routes to San Diego require speeds of over 55mph, these rides are just for scooters able to maintain a consistent 60mph.

Route: http://is.gd/ucl3Pm

This is really close to final, but we may add one more catch up spot. We will provide step-by-step directions with notes, addresses and contact numbers.

We will stick to the PCH/coastline most of the way. This means we'll need to hop on the 5 Freeway for about 15 miles to get past Camp Pendleton. While individuals can ride through the Camp, a large group may not be allowed.

We will do this section in a pack, sticking to the right lane at 55MPH, hopefully with our support vehicle right behind us.

Return Rides:

Check our Pick Up Rides board for return rides coming back Sunday and Monday.

Accommodations:

The main hotel is the Town & Country, though everyone's free to make accommodations elsewhere. I suggest trying to stay close to T&C or Motorsport Scooters/Vespa Motorsport, where many of the activities will begin.

The rally rate for T&C is $119/night, for either a double room or a single king, available via this link:  https://t.co/hXt5my9L

The hotel has a 48 hour cancellation policy, so reserving ASAP may be a good idea. I may crash with friends but have still reserved a room. (They may charge the first night 21 days before the stay begins. This is refundable if you cancel.) The rooms at this rate will likely fill up. Other discounted hotels may become available at that time.

Registration and Rally Itinerary:

Registration is now open at http://www.amerivespa.org

Early bird registration is $60 ($65 for a long sleeved t-shirt).
Discount registration ends Thursday, 2/28.
In exchange for this, attendees receive a giant swag bag full of scooter-y goodness from the many sponsors, official Amerivespa T-shirt, official patch, some Vespa Club of America goodies, at least a couple meals (including a big banquet/awards ceremony) and full access to all events. You'll get your money's worth!

Rally Itinerary will be posted on the Amerivespa site next week as well.

Etc.

Feel free to email me with questions or post below.

Amerivespa is organized by Vespa Club of America and local San Diego organizations. LA Scooter Group is not a sponsor and has no control over scheduling and other aspects of the rally.

Difficulty and length of rides at Amerivespa will vary. They're planning something for everyone. Riders should be comfortable and experienced with group riding before attending. LASG will have several rides before Amerivespa to assist with that.

Please read the LASG Group Policies and Riding Guidelines before attending:

Oh, and plans are already afoot for New Orleans! Danielle may not remember volunteering to help with this (heh heh) but she had a lot of good ideas. And I am almost definitely going as I will be more involved with Vespa Club of America this year.

Drove from NewOrleans to Calsbad Caverns NM ounce. What should have taken about 15 hours took 26. The big easy gave me a whopper of a hangover and I had to keep stopping to nap. Lol

Haha!!! Liam that's funny because I got a ticket about 20 years ago in Texas too as I was speeding in the middle of the night to get to the next exit to use the toilet as I had to pee bad. The cop made me pee in the bush as he was writing up my ticket. I have pictures and videos as my friends were laughing at me...ugh!!!

      1 · July 2, 2013

Total registrants: 630. I suspect there were more scooters and some non-registered people on some rides. The Concours/Gymkhana/Vendor show Saturday had about 1,000 people come through!

It's Tuesday and I feel like I'm finally recouping from this epic adventure. I made so many new friends and caught up with some I haven't seen in a long time. I get bragging rights for riding down to Mexico and clocking 700 miles on my scooter. I feel privileged to have been a part of Amerivespa. I posted some photos here, but have more on Flickr. (I'll have them on FB as well). My handle is hikingboots on both accounts.

My turn (hihi). WOW… It was hard to keep up with this wild-wild-wild bunch of scooterists…! Everyone displayed an abundance of energy, humor, light disposition, and a fiendish delight for riding no matter where. We also had a great leadership and our own modeling crew (hehe). All in all, my odometer read about ~ 500 trip miles (counting my other school events I had to attend to in between Amerivespa celebrations). My memorable moments: Had a great roommate who likes to call AAA when she gets tired of riding. I enjoyed swimming in the pool but never found the jacuzzi. Didn’t eat the 40lb lobster they were boasting about but had my minibar in the back of my scooter. The latest: after riding for four days, it seems that I may have forgotten how to walk again: as soon as I parked it in the garage, I picked up my pooches from their sitter, we all went for a walk/jog, and… I twisted my ankle…! ((LOL)). =>

    3 · July 2, 2013

    • Marc

I logged over 700 miles for the 4 days. I did the Coastal run ride, Mexico ride, High on Hillcrest, Elfin Forest ride (added another 100 miles on our own) and the Sayonara ride. What a great weekend riding with all of the familiar faces and meeting many new ones too.

My helmet is off to you all for riding down, to Eric and others for helping on the rides and in countless other ways (I'm a bad counter) and thanks so much for having fun - that's all we wanted.

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to tell everyone this in person: I'm beaming with pride for our group. It's not just winning an award (which is AWESOME) but that you all really embodied everything that makes our group so awesome. Enthusiastic, fun, friendly, helpful and beyond that constantly modeling good riding skills and behavior. (That person in the pack no one wants to ride behind or near? NOT AN LASG member!) I can scarcely express how grateful I am to to have such a great group of friends and riding companions. Whatever work I put into this (and thanks for all your comments!) paid off big time! What a remarkable and exciting weekend.

That was A W E S O M E! Just the bragging rights to say I rode down to San Diego and back riding only a small segment of the freeway made it worth the experience, then to add all the other rides, events, and old and new friendships just put this long weekend over the top. I take my hat off to the San Diego organizers, they really know how to welcome those from out of town. The blocking during the rides was awe inspiring. The whole event was like taking a vacation with 500 friends, because everyone was really into what we are all into...SCOOTERS. Thanks Eric, more than likely we are not aware of how much effort it takes to pull a meetup together - like this one, our group is really lucky. Thank-you!!!

I totally agree Michelle and as someone who does organize lots of events & outings, it is very time consuming so I'm sure Eric appreciates the recognition. Another tip of the hat to you Eric

Thanks Eric for leading the fantastic ride back today. Great route in getting us out of SD and missing the morning rush hour. I think I enjoyed the ride back more and saw more scenery than on any of the others. Long Beach to the Ventura Blvd exit was the furthest freeway scooter ride I've done. My total GPS distance for the event was exactly 600 miles and 78.2 mpg.
