Living in Los Angeles, it is overwhelming how many sites and attractions there are to explore. We at LASG love to present, in a scooter-friendly fashion, some of the most well-known and some of the lesser known “must see” and “must do” activities in our great city. We call them “Destination Rides”, where they may be short on the ride part, but big on the destination part. This ride combines two such destinations.
If you haven’t been, one must visit Santa Anita Race Track at least once. Built in the ’30s with an Art Deco theme, it is gorgeous, historic, and well, awesome. You don’t have to be a gambler or even a horseracing fan to appreciate the grandeur and spectacle that is the “Sport of Kings.” Seriously, watching the presentation of the horses in the stables before the race, the sound of the trumpet announcing the start, the ring of the bell, and my God, those beautiful animals racing with all their strength past you at speed. It’s exhilarating and spectacular! Yes, one must experience this at least once. And we’re going to take you there.
So here’s the plan: We’ll start from Ralph's on Magnolia, near NoHo Scooters and take a mostly utilitarian ride to the park and hope to get there by 11:30. That will give you an hour to explore before the first race at 12:30. We’ll stay another hour to take in the next two races at 1:00 and 1:30. Now please feel free to spend the day at the track or you can come along to our next must-see destination, the Bahooka restaurant in Rosemead.
Well, what can be said about the Bahooka? To say it’s an oddity would not quite describe its, well, oddness. If you like Polynesian, kitschy tiki stuff, the Bahooka is for you. It makes Trader Vic’s look like a Party City display case. Everywhere you look, there are aquariums (over 100). There are little alcoves and even a jail where you can dine. All decked out with their WAY over the top Polynesian theme. The food is good, but the rum drinks are better (drink responsibly, of course. You have to make it home). This is just one of those must-see-to-be-believed places. And one of our must see destinations…
Sadly, Bahooka is closing in a couple months, so there may not be many more chances to visit!
Because it's closing soon, Bahooka has informed us that they cannot accommodate a group of our size. We will stop there to pay homage and take pics.
LUNCH UPDATE: There will be food trucks at Santa Anita and there are concessions/restaurants in the park. That's going to be the best bet for food!
Here's a list of the food trucks in attendance:
Tentative Route: http://goo.gl/maps/1MYFF
There is a $5 charge to get in the park, but they often waive it. And they charge for Parking. This one we’ll have to play by ear. Last time they just waved my bike through, no charge. Not sure what they’ll do with a pack. But have some dollars to pony up just in case.
Be prepared to have a route back home. There maybe some spontaneous groups formed to get back to various parts of the city, but don’t count on it.
Should be a great day of racing!
Please only RSVP for guests if they're riding, not passengers.
As always, please read our Group Riding Guidelines and Group Policies before attending an LASG ride: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/1490159
If you plan on a ride from your locale to the meetup, please post in the Pick Up Rides board, then post a link here. To keep comments here limited to this meetup, please post comments about Pick Up Rides on those threads.
