ScootLAvia: Venice to DTLA!

CicLAvia is one of the greatest regular community events in the city, when normally congested streets are closed to all traffic but pedestrians and bicycles. April's route runs along Venice Blvd. all the way to the beach, but the Eastbound side will be open to vehicles. We're celebrating the day in our own fashion, with an all-scooter-friendly in-city ride from Venice to Downtown LA.

RSVPs for this Meetup will open Friday, April 5 at noon.

This is an easygoing, urban route through city streets, making this a good meetup for newer members without group experience. 50cc scooters welcome!

We'll start the day at 9:30am with coffee and chitchat at Deus Ex Machina, local HQ of 2-wheeled cool. Parking in the Deus lot. Come early if you want to browse the shop. Coffee service starts at 7, the shop opens at 9.

Kickstands up at 10am.

We'll follow the CicLAvia route along Venice, then cut out on our own, cruising through Culver City, the Wilshire corridor, then up into Elysian Park and around Dodger Stadium. We'll wind up in Downtown LA, crossing the CicLAvia route again, then stopping for lunch at vegan and carnivore-friendly Würstküche. (Immensely popular with the gang last time we rode there!) Anyone who's so inclined can then join us across the street for a slice of heaven at the Pie Hole.

Thanks to Claude, who suggested this Meetup!

A few notes:

Folks should plan their own route home from DTLA.

This won't be a fast ride and we'll encounter a lot of lights and traffic. Those yearning for open roads should wait for the next Meetup (TBA soon!), which will have many.

Würstküche and Pie Hole will likely be crowded and we'll have to spend some time standing in line. More time for socializing.

Würstküche serves beer. If you haven't yet read our policy on drinking and riding, please do so.

Because this is an in-city route with a lot of traffic, this Meetup is limited to 25 members. Only RSVP for additional scooters, not passengers, please. For questions regarding group size and RSVPs, see our RSVP Policy: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/thread/24399262

Hello all! Question? I purchased a used Italjet Torpedo[masked] Piaggio. Wow! This scooter fells like a 200cc, so much power and grabs the road. I am looking for replacement parts, in particular the rear break drum, needs to be replaced ASAP! Otherwise this little bike is very charming! Cheers!

      (818) 861-4640. North Hollywood scooter shop has a whole plethora of old parts. Start with them is my suggestion.

I was kidding about the 60cc of course... my next logical jump would be a 150 or even 250, since I want to be able to occasionally navigate freeways. Still saving my pennies, but soon, soon...

      1 · April 27, 2013

    • Liam

On good. If you're contemplating freeways, then the bigger the better. 150 can do it, but minimum freeway for me is 250. It's not just engine size, but tire size, frame size and weight matter as well at highway speeds. It really depends on how much freeway riding you're going to do and how comfortable you want to be doing it. We're here should you have any questions. Let us know how we can help...

Quick Question - What's the name or contact info for the dude on the red scooter with the 180watt stereo and straw box on the back rack? I need to send him a message. Thank you!

    April 25, 2013

    • Claude

Thanks, that's what I recalled as well, but he's not either of the Mike's on the attendee list.

Great to see so many new people and many of the "regulars" alike. A nice, easygoing ride on a beautiful day with good company! Thanks all for your patience with the route. I'm still trying to figure out how to use the GPS for our custom routes. Still not convinced it's any better than taping the directions to my windshield!

Not sure where Deus Ex Machine is? So is it better to approach from North on Lincoln or South?

    April 20, 2013

    • Claude

best to approach on lincoln from south, then tirn right into first driveway after you cross Venice

Last call on the South Bay/West Side/Beach Cities group ride to-and-from. (starting at 9AM at the Manhattan Beach Olive Garden, Marine & Sepulveda). Will be taking Sepulveda/Lincoln/PCH. For details, CLICK HERE: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooter...

Ok, according to the DOT, the streets won't be fully secured until 9:30 am. So, it appears that if we arrive at the meetup sometime prior to such, we should have a clear passage into Deux. Hope this helps.

    April 20, 2013

  • AL B

Hey Mike, it's on the Northbound corner of Lincoln Blvd, @ Venice. Not sure what the best approach is yet. I live right up the street, so I'll look up the street closure times to figure the best approach.

Use the map in my other meetup post here a few minutes ago (or go to www.ciclavia.org to learn more about the event)

I had some questions already about arriving at the meetup, and crossing the ciclavia route, so I figured this post could be helpful. If you approach from the north on Lincoln, the traffic police will likely take offense if you want to make a u-turn where it is posted not left turn with barricades blocking the left turn lane. And there definitely will be several traffic police at Lincoln and Venice alone. I recall the number of LAPD on the route exceeds 500. If you have never been to a CicLAvia, then now is your chance! Don't miss out, there will be over 100,000 cyclists on the route. Definitely a site to see.

    Hope to see ya there!

P.S. Thanks again to Eric for running with the idea, and to Mercedes and Roger for assisting me in checking out the meetup areas, Venice Canal Bridges (one way street on Dell), and Deus Ex Machina. Let the good times roll!!

Here is the Map of the CicLAvia route (not to be confused with the ScootLAvia route). The purpose of having this map is to plan both your approach to Deus Ex machina in the AM to "meetup" and your route home in the PM as CicLAvia goes till 3 or 3:30.
See the yellow bridges over the Venice Blvd route, those are open intersections and will have traffic police at each intersection.

Approach on Lincoln, from south of Venice is best, then make first right into the Deus Ex Machina motorcycle shop and coffe shop.

Should be interesting. As usual, West Side/South Bay/Beach Cities caravan plans are on the Pick-Up Rides forum (Mercedes beat me to it this time!) Basically Sepulveda/PCH/Lincoln from Manhattan Beach (or maybe from Harbor City, depending... we'll sort that out) up to Venice. Return route will be a bit more complex. http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/thread/33144062#[masked]
