Ride to Santa Paula, Fillmore and Bennett's Honey Farm: SEE UPDATE!

  • May 5, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Our agricultural neighbors to the north in Santa Paula have just the right makings for a world-class honey farm. Orange and avocado groves, fields of buckwheat, sage and wildflowers all willing to give up their sweet nectar to those precious little bees that in turn give us their honey. Bennett’s Honey Farm is in the midst of it all, harvesting the honey for our delight.

They have some beautiful roads and riding up there, too. Why not make a trip of it?

We’ll start out from our normal San Fernando Valley meet-up spot at Starbucks on Ventura and Topanga. We’ll veer north to Simi Valley, then through the country west of the Santa Paula Valley. Turning south, then east, we'll run the entire length of the Valley, ending up at Barrett’s, where the honey tasting is free.

After a short break, we’ll head down highway 126 to Fillmore and lunch at one of its several local eateries. Finally, we’ll head back home over Grimes Canyon for a few twisties and a little more beautiful scenery. We’ll get you back to the San Fernando Valley and our starting point.

ROUTE: http://goo.gl/maps/6Ggsa
This is a scooter-friendly ride but we will be on a few small highways (not major freeways). We will be cruising at 55 MPH in many areas, which limits the ride to 125cc+ scooters.

This ride is suitable for riders with intermediate skills and experience (not beginners). Be prepared for a full day of riding, honey tasting, eating and communing with fellow scooterists.

Please be sure to show up with a full tank of gas and your scooter in good running order.
Find info on checking your tires, oil and more here: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/9051472

Hi folks my adorable Vespa just broke down!!! :( :( and I am not a happy camper since all I wanted to do was make it for tomorrow's ride. It went down like this so any help or ideas is great. I was riding my Vespa , with a full tank of gas an hour ago and luckily it broke near my home in Westwood, so while riding on Wilshire Ave suddenly something felt wrong and I pulled over a drive way.
I started the Vespa and the engine feels fine and strong but the back tire seems locked. I couldnt even move it or push it off the drive way. One of the bellboy of the building had to help me push it since it was blocking the driveway and now is sitting there on the sidewalk.
Any idea what is wrong with it? Is the chain or belt broken? Will that lock the back wheel at all?
Praying that is something simple and maybe I can buy the part today and fix it. Or have someone come over. On the bright side, GLAD it didnt happen tomorrow and 100 miles away from home :)

    TIA

    Pag

What a great day! Even familiar routes (with some unfamiliar stuff thrown in) are great fun with good company. Thanks to Liam for always having a route ready, leading and taking us up some lesser-known streets. Thanks to Gary for sweeping. And thanks to you all for coming out on a cool and damp day in the canyons!

And lady... Mercedes, you're a trooper hanging out with all us Neanderthals. You class up the group!

..LOL... Liam ET AL, always a pleasure hanging out with the boyz but hope to see more lady riders and/or pax spouses in the future. I missed Liam's morning cocoa (you see? that's why I was so cold in the AM). Anyway, it was a great route: thank you, leaders, always a class act. And riders, fun, safe and respectful on the road, in every way. On another note, nice to see the Rock Store empty for a change... BTW, great Reel's eatery (I hate Neptune's net other than the sand walk)...!

Hey guys, really nice riding with everyone. Sure it was last minute. Sure it rained. Sure it was freezing at times. But the conversation was great, the twisties as fun as ever to ride, and the company warm... Sounds the making of a great day to me!

So, welcome to the newbies, hope you had a good time. To the ones I didn't get around to talk to, we'll do it next time. And to my old friends, always excellent to see you again. Even you Gary! ; )

I'm heading out the door in about 15 minutes. Haven't seen anyone besides Mercedes call for the Harbor City starting point, so consider it deleted. 3 · May 4, 2013

  • Liam

Sorry everyone, but the risks of someone going down in a ride of this size really increase to an unacceptable level when it rains. It's a bummer, but a busted up bike, or heaven forbid body, is much worse. Plus this ride is just to good to waste on a bad weather day. We'll reschedule it soon.

    2 · May 4, 2013

  • corey

That sucks, but it is probably for the best with all the smoke and ash in the air out that way.

    May 4, 2013

Augh! Bummer. I was really looking forward to this ride through new (to me) territory. And, we'll be gone the next two months, so don't resched too soon! Since the replacement ride starts at the same point, is it possible to make a call on the Honey Ride later tonight with more up-to-date weather forecast?

    1 · May 4, 2013

Sad to say we have to postpone this one, folks. See the announcement above or check your email. We will be doing a Malibu Canyon ride instead. Please change your RSVP if this affects you. I wanted fresh honey, too! :(

    ***Important. Please Read***

I intend on leading everyone to the Fillmore train station before lunch. When we get there, we will set a KSU time to leave approximately 1 1/4 hours after we arrive. Everyone should be back to the station after lunch and ready to ride at that time.

There are a few restaurants within walking distance of the station, but most are a very short ride on Ventura St. So you may want to keep your gear on when we arrive at the train station, get the KSU time, and then leave for your lunch. Take a moment to review the above site and decide where you might want to eat. ***Please be back to the Train station at the designated KSU time. We are not taking roll call. You will be responsible for getting yourself back on time and ready to ride. Otherwise you risk being left behind.***

    Should be a great ride!

Definitely not just a SFV group, but it is an LA group. It may take a little effort to get to the starting point, but it will be worth it. Use Google maps to select Non-freeway (avoid highways) routes to the starting points. If you can't make this one, hope to see you on future rides.

Just sent an email to all who are RSVP'd. Please check your boxes. Just to reiterate on the weather: Forecast is currently saying 70s with possibility of drizzle in the Fillmore area. We're going to keep a close eye on this; we don't want to get caught in showers so far from home. If we need to cancel, we'll make a call on Friday and announce via email and on the page for this Meetup.

If the forecast remains the same ("Drizzle"), we will go on as planned. If you are uncomfortable with riding on potentially wet surfaces, you may want to change your RSVP. We have many more great rides in the pipeline!

Totally!!!! Not a new rider, but great advice and appreciate the concern, Liam. I Definately don't want to endanger anyone or myself for sure. If I don't join y'all, hope it's a fun ride and Definately see y'all on future ones.

    April 30, 2013

    • Liam

Oh I understand you're an experienced rider. But every bike behaves differently and it takes a while to learn its proclivities. A group ride is not the time to learn them. This advice was as much for the group in general, than you in specific. I really hope you can join us for the ride. Good luck on the search.

I'm looking at a scooter today, would love the possibility of taking it on a spin this weekend. Rob

    April 30, 2013

    • Liam

Good Luck, I hope you get it. Be that as it may, I do NOT recommend taking a new, untested bike on a huge group ride. I have seen people, unuse to the new scoot, dump them with all that goes on in a group riding environment. I HIGHLY suggest you take it out everyday this week and all day Saturday, if you intend on making Sunday's ride. And be sure to get some canyon riding in as well. I cannot stress enough that you need to know your bike and it's riding capabilities BEFORE you get in a group ride. You endanger yourself and your fellow riders otherwise. Okay enough doom and gloom, just ride the heck out of that thing and have a good time. If you think you're comfortable enough on it, we'll see you on Sunday. Let us know how it goes. : )
