The 2010 (33rd) Pasadena Doo Dah Parade is May 1, 2010. Last year we put together a group of scooterists to ride in the parade and everyone had a blast! If eccentricity is your cup of tea, then this is the event for you!
For those who have not been to the parade or seen the event, words can not describe it, so I suggest you do a YouTube search and check out some of the videos. There are also a bunch of photos of last years Meetup posted in our photo section.
This year, we're trying to all do costumes around a single theme. The theme: Scooting Superheroes! So a mask, a cape, homemade t-shirt, helmet decoration, scooter decorations, anything that fits into that theme goes. We're not talking about Superman, Batman, et. al. on scooters—just make up your own superhero. If it's scooter-related, even better! It would be great if everyone had a shirt or sign on their scooter or something with their scootering superhero name.
This is all about having fun and being more than a little ridiculous. The costume and decor can be as elaborate as you like. Personally, I won't be wearing tights or spandex but I have some ideas.
Visit the Doo-Dah Parade website for more info. There is a $10 fee per vehicle (charged by the parade organizers). Please bring cash (exact change preferred).
Note that the location of the parade has moved east to Colorado Blvd between Sierra Madre Blvd & San Gabriel Blvd.
For those meeting us in Pasadena, the staging area is here:
2627 E. Colorado Bl., Pasadena, 91107
Map: http://is.gd/bHPKK...
The parade organizers have requested that we arrive by 9:30.
After the parade, we'll ride to another location for some eats.
Some of these details will change as we get closer to the ride, but for now we'll meet at Trails on Fern Dell just inside Griffith Park and ride to Pasadena, where we'll likely meet up with some other riders at a location TBD.
This is an all-scooters ride open to everyone, so feel free to invite your scootering pals, even if they're not meetup group members or to spread the word via the scooter groups and forums. Also, if you haven't yet, please check out our group riding tips before coming out.
Look forward to hearing everyones costume ideas and seeing you there!
Skootz, Eric, Mike, et al...
For those who haven't been to this event or done this ride before, I have to tell you, it is one of the funnest things I have ever done. Look up eclectic in the dictionary and there is a photo of the Doo-Dah Parade. And to ride your scooter down a road with 1000's of people lining each side of the street for as far as the eye can see, is really something to be experienced. Oh, and the marshmallows and tortillas, that's something to be experienced too :) Tons of YouTube videos if you search...
Just checked with the Doo Dah people. The parade has been moved to May 1st.
Cool! That's my birthday! I always thought there should be a parade on my birthday :)
Looks like we may get some friends from the San Diego Scooter Squadron coming up to join us! This is going to be great!
So psyched that the SD contingent will be joining us. Like a mini-Doo-Dah rally! I'll start thinking up (or trying to) some twisted group costume ideas that we can all easily do.
Are we going with The League of Super Awesome Scooter Heroes costumes?
How does this whole thing work? Do we meet up for costume creation?
Jen: Yup. I'm sending out the announcement ASAP.
Sandra: We're all sort of scattered so we'll have to create separately. We'll be pulling it all together and putting on our decorations and such in Pasadena before the parade, though.
I saw the email about costumes. Sounds great! I'll get crackin' on my gear for the parade. See you then!
WOT Man and the power of my Sonic Boom will be there!
I need to know if there is room for the truck and trailer (18ft) to be parked for the duration at the meetup site. Also the meetup time is 8:30 what is KSU?
Hey, Perry. There's not room at the Meetup location. There is room at NoHo Scooters, so maybe we could meet there beforehand, unload and ride to the Meetup. I live near NoHo, so could meet and lead to Trails, about 20 minutes away.
We need to in Pasadena by 10, parade starts at 11, so KSU by 9.
We plan on leaving San Diego @ 5:30am, 12 scoots in the truck/trailer, others riding up with us. Limited to 55mph while pulling a trailer. I think we'll be okay on time. Is the NoHo area safe to leave the truck?
Definitely safe enough. I send my cell number to you; I think Jen has it too but I'll make sure. How many coming up with you?
A couple of questions from a San Diegan. What is the meet up time @
the staging area? What time does the parade start ? Thanks LA
Must be at assembly point in Pasadena before 10am according to Eric
10 am is correct. The parade location has been moved this year and the exact staging location wasn't available last time I checked. The Doo Dah site is now crashing every browser I try to visit with. Nice!
I'll post the location as soon as I know here and on the SD group page. I'll also have route information.
The location is Denny's Restaurant at 2627 E. Colorado Bl. The last time I was in the area there were no parking meters, but I think there was a 2-hour limit; not sure though. About a mile or so north is Victory Park where the Rose Parade floats are displayed starting January 1. It's located at the corner of North Altadena Drive and Paloma Street. Parking may be easier there.
Wow, that's where the staging is? Last year, staging took up a whole block with floats, etc. all lined up?
I know! It's got me a little confused, but that's what I read on-line a few days ago. NoHo Mike thinks that it's at the corner of Sierra Madre and Colorado, which makes more sense. I'm just going to come early and drive around until I find it, then go park and unload my scoot.
I was about to make the same suggestion as Highball's - if you're coming early enough, you can park at Victory Park. The address is 2575 Paloma Street, Pasadena, CA 91107. But you can park anywhere around there. They also have a farmer's market between 8:30am and 12:30pm.
Well, if we're in the parade, we won't have to worry about parking?we'd all just assemble in the staging area.
You're absolutely right, Eric. I was just thinking about the people like me who'll have to trailer their scoots to Pasadena.
I have eaten at that Denny's many times. There is a huge parking lot in the back. Im guessing thats where the staging will be. Anyone trailering a bike should be able to find parking somewhere around there. Its not a bad parking situation like Old Town Pasadena.
I recieved an e-mail from the Doo Dah people. They want everyone to arrive no later than 9:30 AM. Also remember to bring $10 CASH per person.
Yowza, that's early. Mike, where's the staging place where we all have to gather. I may ride from NoHo straight to Pasadena with the San Diego group.
Right now the 10-day weather forecast calls for 40% chance of showers on parade day. Dang!
Yo, L.A., do we have a confirmation on the staging area? Colorado and Sierra Madre or the Denny's or just ride around and keep an eye out for Super Heroes on scooters.

Hi i told my cousin about the parade and if he has the day off on Saturday he may come, he just bought a scooter this weekend I think is an 80 or a 120 but anyways he doesn't have a M1 license is it require at the parade also the insurance?
Adrian: M1 licence, insurance, helmet, and all other CA DOT/DMV legal requirements are required. Also, I do not recommend this for a brand new rider. Being in absolute control of your scooter in a confined area, surrounded by 40 other scooters and 1000's of people all pelting you with marshmallows and tortillas is not as simple as it sounds.
If you haven't already noticed, the rain forecast is gone.
I'm super excited but still don't know what I'm going dressed as. I have a costume but it clashes with my scooter. Buddy Italia does not go with my black and white outfit.
Ha, I think if we're all in costumes, clashing with the scooter won't be too noticeable or a big deal. It's hard to come up with something that matches an Italia!

Awesome, Skootz! I'm using iron-on tape for mine.
Only one more day to get those hero costumes ready, folks!

Now that many of us will have scootin' hero costumes, I'm thinking we should just do some random rides in the future while wearing them. Maybe some scooterhero flash mobs or something. And possibly fight a little crime on the side...
While I doubt anyone will get busted for not wearing theirs, we've never heard an official word on helmets so I can't say whether going without is allowed. I think all of us wore them last year.
I seem to remember a few people not wearing helmets during the parade. But as soon as we were riding out of the parade area, a cop told folks to put their helmets on.
In San Diego parades, seldom, if ever, do you see helmets on two wheel vehicle riders. law enforcement doesn't seem to care in that situation.
Everyone should be prepared to wear a helmet. Last year we did. I can't recall if it was a mandate or not (but I believe it was required) but we decided as a group to wear helmets regardless to represent the scooter community well and send the right message about safety to everyone including the many children present at the parade.
How can we post pictures????
There's an "Add Photos" link above these comments. Or try this link:

Great time. Note to self: Next year, do NOT grab flying tortilla and eat.
We had ball. It was definitely quite an experience. The LA scooter group is cool. You folks know how to have a good time. Thanks.

By the way. The $10 fee is per person, not per vehicle.
