Ride to Rock Inn

May has perhaps the best riding weather of the entire year in Southern California. So guess what? It's big ride month! In deference to this theme, we've planned a great big, beautiful ride to the historic Rock Inn.

What's the Rock Inn? Only the coolest motorcycle hangout nestled in between some of the tastiest roads in the city. It's an old Post Office up on Lake Elizabeth Rd. turned restaurant with some of the finest roadside cafe cuisine. This ride is as worthy as any the "big boys" ride, and you'll see a lot of big boys out there; this really is a true motorcycle hangout. If you're interested in getting out of town amongst the flora and fauna, pine trees and many of the lakes this beautiful city has to offer, this is the ride is for you.

RSVPs for this ride open Friday, May 3 at noon.

Details:
Ranch Side Cafe (meetup spot): http://ranchsidecafe.com/
Meet at 9:30am
Kickstands Up (KSU) at 10:00am

Arrive early if you want breakfast at the Ranch Side!

Route: http://goo.gl/maps/iOMIH
Don't worry about that little bit that looks like it's going down the 5 Fwy. It's actually called "The Old Road." It's the precursor to the 5 and very passable for scooters.

This is a medium – advanced ride. You really need to know your bike and skills of canyon riding to do this one. Please no beginners or people inexperienced on their bike. As there are a lot of hills on this ride, 125cc and above bikes only. Two-up riding only if you have the bike and the skills to do it. We're not saying it's dangerous, but yours truly came around a turn up in this area and encountered a deer in the middle of the road once. These are some of the risks one must accept when signing up for a ride like this. No joke.

This will be a really fun ride!

Please show up with a full tank of gas.

Be sure your scooter is in good running order. Find info on checking your tires, oil and more here:http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/9051472

Please read our official Policies and Group Riding Guidelines before attending an LASG ride:http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/1490159

Looks like this was a rousing success! I only missed it due to a prior commitment (riding, of course!) but am glad it went so well. Great job Liam, Syl and Team LASG and thanks to all who came out.

Lots of new members on this, too. Hope to meet you all at a future Meetup. We're gearing up for Amerivespa in June, but will have at least one small one before then and MANY after! Welcome to LASG!

Thanks to everyone for coming out. It was a spectacular day! Really nice riding weather, perfect roads and no fire. Special thanks to Syl. You're an Angel on a Ninja, you've the patience of Job, and my right hand man today.

But really it's all the people in the group that make it so wonderful. Thanks for being such fine, fun, and nice people. Without you, the organizers are just a bunch of guys with maps and some riding experience. It's great to hang with all of you. : )

Hmmm, there's another great place up that way that serves a pretty great breakfast... Early morning ride perhaps... During summer when it's too hot to ride that area in the midday sun... If you like the idea, "like" this comment and maybe we can make that happen if theres sufficent interest. It's too pretty an area to not ride all summer long.

My first time, had lots of fun. I spend part of my childhood living in Green Valley and Munz Lake. The lakes were dry in the late 50's early 60's. We rode horses were the lakes were. Saw my old house and the old 1800's stage building was still standing. Thanks for the fun.
I'm selling a Kymco People 150, 1,800mi, garaged just serviced.

To make this announcement fills me with great sadness, for I have lost a life today during our amazing ride! I bid farewell to a good friend of 7 years, took me many places! both near and far! even when i was lost I found my way! helped me save a friend when she had a flat tire over 50 miles always from her home! today was the last day I ever saw my GPS alive! I bid you farewell my little navigating friend! may the satellites navigate you to GPS heaven! RIP my Garmen Streetpilot C340! you will truly be missed by me! ;)

Thanks to Christophers and Stephen Benson for joining me on the way to the ride. It worked out quite well despite being pulled together at the last-minute. Credit to Chris for phone-retrieval skills, and to Syl for creative sweep-riding (Ninja-Boost™ FTW). And, of course, to Liam for stepping up on short notice to lead the ride. It was great to see everyone again!

I've had that happen before (it was the wire having come loose at the connector to the plug in my case). At least you found the problem, and it's an easy fix.

Final Westside route join-up points: Pann's at 0830, CB&TL (3rd & La Cienega) 0845, Sunset & Crescent Heights (Laurel Cyn) 0855. At this point the only confirmed riders are myself and Christophers, and I am waiting to hear what Stephen Benson is planning to do. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the morning! Note that I'll be on my blue Burgman, not the orange Vespa.

Due to the potential wildfire hazards, we have an alternate route back and an entirely different route to Acton should the need arise to avoid the area altogether. We will check with the Rock Inn in the morning to see if the roads are clear and change accordingly. For now, the ride is scheduled to go as planned. Please meet up at the designated time and place. We will you update then. : )

HI folks my 14 yrs old daughter is playing her first tennis match tomorrow in OC. I thought it was a regular practice then her mom told me that is a real match. SO I will have to step aside this time and let someone else take my plc. I was really looking forward to riding, hanging and eating with all my wonderful scooter pals. So until next time. Have fun, take lots of pix and ride safe! Pag

West Side Riders -- please check the ride-to-the-ride thread. Stephen and Pag are taking a different surface street route (via Beverly Glen). Christophers -- can their Beverly Glen routing work for you? If not, I'm still ok with taking my planned surface street route via Laurel Canyon, and will do so on the existing schedule unless I announce otherwise here on the main ride thread.

  • Lauren K.

Wish I could do this .. but have another function.

    May 17, 2013

  • Liam

Well it seems we have a brush fire in the area we're riding to tomorrow. It's not very big right now, but the tankers can't get in due to topographical issues. Helicopters are up and the nearness of the lake is helping with drop times. We'll monitor the the situation tonight to see if a route modification is necessary. The ride is on for now.

    2 · May 17, 2013

  • Rusty

Just a heads-up: while I'm participating in this ride, I'm not planning to lead a west-side/south bay convoy this time -- I'll be taking the freeway because of how far away the starting point is. However, if anyone from this end of town is interested, I might try to pull one together on short notice.

I'd like to bring the Sym Wolf 150 out this time. Will it have enough oomph for this route?

    2 · May 13, 2013

    • JosephAngsuco

The only thing you really have to worry about is a slightly slower top speed than some traffic but stay in the right hand lane and you should be fine.

      May 17, 2013

    • JosephAngsuco

Oh and one more thing I have actually ridden mine from LA to Vegas using the freeways, I just tailed slower moving trucks. No problems other than I was the one overheating, not the engine.

I was looking forward to this, but my scoot is in the shop until Saturday morning, so I guess I need to bow out. Have fun, all!

    May 17, 2013

  • Liam

The weather looks great for tomorrow! Forecast is for upper 70's, but that's at valley level. We will be climbing a couple thousand feet in some canyon areas, which will certainly decrease the tempurature 10 degrees possibly. So be prepared with gloves, jackets, etc. for your personal comfort. Gonna be a great ride. : )

Ronald, if you want to ride for fun thru the canyons, shoot me a text[masked] we can ride together on a weekend, and we'll add some more miles to your experience. Liam and Eric take no pleasure in turning riders away. We have the luxury of just having fun and ride. They unfortunately have the responsibility for everyone's safety as organizers. Just FYI, I'm trying to join another riding group and they want me to show I rode at least 6000 miles and at least 10 previous group rides before they would approve my joining request. See you soon.
