Newcomb's Ranch Ride

Have you ever noticed the cool banner photo at the top of our Meetup website; the one with all the bikes lined up, headlights on and everyone ready to hit the open road? Well if you look closely, you'll notice the sign on the building reads "Newcomb's Ranch."

To say Newcomb's is an institution in the Los Angeles riding community is an understatement. It is THE premier MC hangout in the area. Everyone who rides two wheels as their transport of choice goes to Newcomb's. Being a scooter group in LA, we would be remiss in not visiting it regularly, if no other reason than to introduce it to new members. It's been about a year and a half since we last rode to this heralded ground and it's high time we get back!

We'll start from our new favorite location, Ranch side Café in Sylmar. A short trek will get us to Big Tujunga Canyon. Then it's off to Upper Big Tujunga Canyon, and Angeles Crest Highway; a spectacular ride to say the least. We'll have lunch at Newcomb's, hang out for a while, then make our way all the way back down ACH to Glendale. You'll be on your own from there.

Itinerary:
Meet at Ranch Side at 10:00am
Kickstands Up (KSU) at 10:30am

Route map: http://goo.gl/maps/H20Yy

Difficulty, Restrictions:
Some twisty turny roads means intermediate-level riding abilities with some experience with canyon/mountain carving. We'll keep a very moderate pace as this ride is too good to let blur by. There will be many sport bikers up there, so be prepared to let them pass (safely, of course.)

Riding with a passenger is not recommended for this ride, especially if it's your first time out with the group. Terrain demands 125cc+ scooters capable of 55mph speeds and handling steep inclines.

Unsure if you're ready to tackle this ride? See our "Ride Difficulty and Rider Experience" post.

Ride is limited to 40 scooters. Please don't RSVP +1 for a passenger!

Etc.

Please be sure to show up with a full tank of gas and your scooter in good running order. Find info on checking your tires, oil and more here: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/9051472

Please read our official Policies and Group Riding Guidelines before attending an LASG ride:  http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/forum/1490159

As always, please feel free to email us with any questions or concerns or to post in the comments below.

Looking forward to seeing you there and introducing this two-wheel icon to those uninitiated!

Well I had such a great time that now I am shopping for a faster, bigger scooter! I love my Buddy 125 and had fun trying to keep up :-)

I really appreciate all these comments and suggestions. I have a regular commute of 4 miles on city streets splitting narrow lanes, for which I love my little Buddy, and 4 miles on the 101 freeway. I routinely take my Buddy out on the freeways. I'm either lane splitting traffic, or sticking to the far right lane maxing out at 65 MPH indicated (probably 55?). But it's a wobbly, bumpy ride.

Well Nicholas, if you're really interested in purchasing a new bike, you should consider posting it on the Discussion board. Let us know what your requirements are and we'll all chime in on suggestions. Then you can update us on your test rides, progress and decision. Might be fun : ) Just a thought...

Sorry I missed the ride. How was the heat coming down through Big Tujunga? Anything like our ride a couple weeks ago, Liam? Blast Furnace?

    1 · June 17, 2013

    • Eric G.

I asked because our return through tujunga a few weeks back was 106 and it truly sucked. That it came at the tail end of a long ride made it that much worse. Glad you guys didn't have to deal with that. At that temp nothing helps but wet gear!

I've been real happy with my Venson silver mesh jacket and Tourmaster vented overpants. Just sayin' ...

As I was running late, I had to rendez-vous with the group en route at the Shell station before we turned into Little Tujunga. I neglected to fuel up while I was there. A big thanks to Steve Benson for spotting me the extra gasoline to make sure I didn't run out of fuel on the way down!

    • Christophers

The Blackjack seems a bit more liberal with it's use of fuel than the Buddy 125 did.

      Thanks for being prepared Steven!

With the assumption that you are leading the group, unfortunately they may move faster, but probably while lost when following you and your GPS toy!

      1 · June 14, 2013

    • Liam

Said the man with every toy, light, storage box, electronica, and gizmo know to scooterdom. Folks the guy has a trailer hitch on his scooter. Need I say more...

Have to catch up on some things early Saturday so don't think we'll make it to the Ranch Side Cafe by the designated hour. Might see at Newcomb's Ranch later.

can't wait to get out on my new scoot!

    1 · June 5, 2013

    • Liam

Very nice! Try to get some ride time in on the new scoot before this one, specifically canyon runs. You won't be disappointed in this route!

      June 6, 2013

    • AL B.

Nice, it will be a lot of fun!

      June 6, 2013

  • Liam

FYI, the ride description says to show up with a full tank of gas. However we will make one fuel stop at a Shell station before we head up into the mountains. The entire ride is 70 miles, so we should all be good for the remainder of the ride.

    June 6, 2013

    • AL B.

Is it OK if I show up with no gas, a bone dry tank and low tire pressure?

      1 · June 6, 2013

    • Liam

Only if you want to push your bike to the gas station.

      June 6, 2013

  • AL B.

Oops, thought the ride was on Sunday, can't go on a Saturday. :(

    June 6, 2013

  • AL B

Sounds like this is one ride I cannot miss!
