The bird with the black head and two long white feathers coming back has been identified. He's a black crown night heron.

    1 · May 15, 2013

    • Kerry

This guy is unusual in the heron family by being short. Green herons are also short, but the white and blue ones are tall. Gorgeous, but tall.

      May 16, 2013

    • Michelle

I didn't know there were green herons Kerry. Sounds as if you know something about herons or birds. The next book I'll have to get is on on herons - after I finish reading about deer. Thanks for the information.

    Recommended settings
Night photography is a challenge, and quite often experimentation is the key to success. It is possible to handhold a camera and still shoot at night but this may require a wider aperture, a higher ISO rating. You are usually working with shutter speeds of 1/15th of a second or slower. If you use a tripod then you can afford to use AV (aperture priority) mode and let the camera choose the shutter speed.
    Aperture try f/8 and up.
shutter speed try 8 seconds up to 30 seconds
Iso try 100 to 3200, the higher the iso the more grain, which might be cool.
Manual setting on you camera can give you more control over your night shoots.
Shoot in raw if possible gives you more room to play in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Thanks Lynette, good information. Even though I've had my Nikon D70 (an older but great camera) for a couple years, I'm still learning how to use it.

    Light painting
Light paintings a fun technique that gives great results. All you have to do is experiment.
A flash light, a dark location?
Set the exposure to a long value. Stop down the Aperture as much as you need.
Make the click, once the shutter is open use your flash light to light the objects or persons that you want to paint.
Use the your light source just like you would have done with brush and paper.
Light pen can do more precise work, draw around an object or person.
Make sure if you are drawing around a person that they hold still for as long as you shutter is open.
if you move at a quick pace with light paint a scene you will not be in the photo.

Thanks Lynette for this information. I can practice it here at home, so that the next time there's either a meetup that continues after dark, I will know what I'm doing. It will also give me an "excuse" to use my tripod sitting in the closet.

Thanks Lynette for the great infomation (great, since I didn't know this technique). I can practice it here at home so that the next time there's a meetup that goes into the night or a night shoot, I'll be a bit better at it. Also, it will give me an "excuse" to use my tripod sitting in the closet.

So many of you are such great artists, besides being a photo guru. If we started a gallery right now, well we could have some great art shows. LOL. Already I am inspired by all your great eyes, vision and artistic talent you all have.

Don't have the necessary equipment for a night shoot and not feeling well. Have a great time everyone.

    May 12, 2013

  • lynette

    Night time shooting
    recommended Equipment
A wide-angle lens is very useful. It gives a panoramic effect that requires less light. A zoom lens can also be fun, by turning the zoom lens in and out giving your photo a great artistic look. A tripod is recommended this allows you to have longer shutter times and therefore avoid using flash. but not always nessesary, you can always place you camera on a flat surface. Cable release and shutter remotes are useful to avoid touching the camera during long exposure's.

  • Michelle

Doing my best to feel better so I can make it. I still have to go to the 99 cents store for a flashlight. I agree, Westlake MacArthur Park is a great area for photo. I've taken photos there before, but didn't really know what I was doing. Hopefully see all of you later. ;-)

I'm looking forward to this meetup. The people in that area are actually very nice. I worked there at one point and have also been through there many times, granted in the daytime. It will be great to get some guidance from Larry, so I hope we don't race through the area, but take time to walk slowly (especially since I have a disability and cannot walk as fast as some others. ;-)

The map link to Google is incorrect now. It displays the meeting as being in Beverly Hills at Wilshire and Rodeo Drive. Entering "Park View and 7th Street" or "MacArthur Park Lake" gives a correct map.
