(NO HOST) Los Angeles Arboretum Free Day

On the 3rd Tuesday of the month, there is free admission to the Arboretum in Arcadia. With spring almost here, the beautiful gardens are in bloom. On the grounds peacocks, peahens and other birds and animals roam freely. There are also birds and animals on the pond across from the beautiful Queen Anne cottage and other ponds, plus a waterfall. Orchids and other plants bloom in the greenhouses.

There is no tram on this day. I know most people work during the week, but on this day, the grounds are not very crowded.

The Arboretum is easily accessible by MTA. Parking is free. The address is 301 North Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA, 91007. It is across from Santa Anita Racetrack.

We will meet at the Gift Shop entrance at 11:45 am.

Here is the website for information - http://www.arboretum.org/index.php/visit/ which gives visiting information and much more about the Arboretum.

It was good meeting you Trenton...I'm sorry I could only get you started pointing the direction of where to go. By the time I met you I had already circled the gardens. I was hoping that everyone would read my message and leave earlier. Sorry folks it was not my meetup and I did not want to change the time...for future meet ups here I suggest an earlier time as to acquire a parking space...also much COOLER! Thanks again to those that made it out!

Many photographers frequent the Arboretum. The people with their big lenses mounted on gimble head tripods are for photographing the many kinds of birds that's in the park.

Trenton, also not all of us have dslrs with long lenses. I have only a Nikon D70 and a Sony 12 mpx. But, if I'm able to make it as host, I carry a sign that tells the name of the group and my name and that I'm the host. Thank you Galen for the explanation. I'm so sorry to have missed this meetup at the Arboretum, since it's a favorite place of mine for photography, being outdoors, getting some exercise, and being with a fun group of people. The last time I was able to go and host (the first time I scheduled this meetup) only about 6 showed up, but we had a great time. And no, not everyone had dslrs with long lenses and mono-pods. ~Michelle~

only met 2 people here around 11:45. We stayed around the gift shop until about 12 noon then walked aorund. Was almost going to blow this event off because there wasn't any available parking but luckily after the 3rd drive around, someone had just left near the entrance and I finally got a spot!

Schedule it earlier than meet up when you can...check in when you arrive and ask them where to meet you at. They get parking and you don't have to rush

I need more practice with fast action wildlife shots. I take better macros of food!!

FYI. My understanding is that Baldwin Lake is drying up, and the Arboretum is going to drain it and restore it in the near future. So if you want to take images of the birds that habit the lake go sooner rather than later. FWIW. As Larry and others have stated early morning is better than later. Besides birds and ducks are more active, and much cooler.

when 3 of us met in front of the gift shop, we were trying to look for yewneeklymee's red hair at the botanical gardens or larry but didn't see any of them and figured they got there much earlier.

Thanks Larry for showing some of the highlights of the place. I left about 3pm after I was able to catch the elusive Hummingbird. It was worth the wait!

When Michelle said she wasn't going to be there I decided to go...I wanted to change the time she set for 11:45 but the problem with that is people go by the email and dont check the calendar for more information. I Wanted to set it for 9am...because parking is half full at 9am. It wasn't my meet up so I figured most of you were set for 11:30. I stated I was there at 9am I met 1 person and showed them where to go than Zeke and I left!

Thank you for taking over and helping out Larry. There is also another parking lot south of the Arboretum. I don't drive, so getting there early by Metro is a little more difficult. If I host another meetup at the Arboretum in the future, if I could get a ride from someone (and I'd be willing to meet them somewhere), I'd schedule the meetup for an earlier time. Hope everyone had a great time. Looking forward to the photos.

Sorry everyone, I'm still not feeling well, so I won't be there. I'll miss seeing everyone I've met and meeting new people. Have a great time.

Michelle was helped by a friend to do a system restore on her computer, so I will be there. YAY! Thank you Larry for your help and the great conversation we had.

Look for the hummingbirds. They're awesome and challenging to photograph, but fun and gratifying when you're able to capture their images in flight or on a branch. You need a long lens and high shutter speed to freeze the wings, and quick reflexes. Hummingbirds are quick, dart in and out. When they hover, it's only for a moment. You have to be decisive in your shooting. Have fun and good shooting.

I like seeing hummingbirds Galen. They are one of my favorite birds. My Nikon just isn't good enough, I don't believe, to freeze the motion of the wings although I can get shutter speeds that are quite high. Hopefully, I'll feel well enough to be there - getting something to help my legs feel better. ~Michelle~

I usually go earlier in the morning when they are the most active and feeding. Although you may see some in the later morning and past noontime. They like cooler temps.

I am having health issues again and may have to cancel this meetup. I've contacted someone to see about taking over as host. I apologize in advance if I have to cancel it. So, if you see it's cancelled, it's not because I didn't want to do it, but because I'm not feeling up to it healthwise. ~Michelle~

I hope you're doing better, take care my friend.

I'm just following what Chris told me - that I couldn't do it as a no host. There's still a possibility I can make this one. I'll keep this one on the schedule, since it's a nice day out to just walk and be in the fresh air, plus taking photos. Thank you Susan.

Rocky, I'm not sure what happened, but I had some kind of cramp in my left leg making it difficult to walk. It's feeling somewhat better.

I understand Rocky. We'll see each other at another meetup. 'Sides, you've got your wife and kids to take care of because of your job...hmmm...or is it the other way around? ;-)

Is the meetup time 10 am? It says 11:45 PM in the date/time info.

I like the later start time myself so I can avoid rush hour traffic. (BTW, It still says 11:45 PM instead of 11:45 AM at the top of the page.)\

    • Michelle

Thanks Susan for the heads up. I changed the one and forgot to change the other. This vertigo really messes with my mind. Another reason for the later start - no, not 11:45 pm! - is that I have trouble getting going in the morning because of my other disabilities. Gosh, I'm a train wreck!
