Paris Photo Show & Photo Independent Exhibit

Calling all 2,055 photographers in this group! There are 2 important photography events happening on the same days: Saturday April 26 & Sunday April 27 and they're right across the street from each other.

Please know there is an admission fee for each event.

The first is Paris Photo LA held at Paramount Studios
http://www.parisphoto.com/losangeles
Paris Photo is like Photo LA. Many galleries will set up on the lot and exhibit the photographers they sell or represent.

The second is Photo Independent at Raleigh Studios right across the street from Paramount Studios. This is the first year for Photo Independent and it's open to all photographers.

http://photoindependent.com

That's right, you can submit your work to Photo Independent to possibly display along with other photographers. But you have to hurry. They are accepting submissions only until Monday March 31 so get them in quickly!

I'll be showing some work and I thought some group members might want to submit and exhibit as well. If not, there will be plenty of photographers and their photographs to take in.

Think of the Photo Independent Exhibit as an amazing classroom where you can see the work and ask questions about it right then and there to the photographer. Ask the photographers about their printing techniques, their paper, photo size and resolution, camera settings and shooting technique, anything you might have a question about.

And at Paris Photo on the Paramount lot you can ask questions to the gallerists or curators. How do they choose the photographers to show or represent? How much of a cut do they make? How do they promote the photographers they are exhibiting? Ask away!

Do yourself a favor and check out Paris Photo and Photo Independent's websites. A lot of photographers will be coming. Why not you?

Note: This is an Open Event. If you want to go, check out the day and time that's good for you and attend. Go with friends. Enjoy!

Any member is welcome to post ideas, info or comments, or respond to posts on the groups message boards .. It occurred to me that many of the newer members might not be aware that the boards exist. Or that they can use them... If you have any gear or services to sell,, That would be the place to do it ..

Mike,, I'll see if I can find someone expert on self publishing to do a seminar or workshop. I don't see my self as knowledgeable enough on the subject to do it .. To quote Clint Eastwood " a man should know his limitations".....

    Appreciate your thoughts Chris.
Saw both exhibits. Always inspiring to see great street photography (A.C-B, etc). Maybe I'm showing my age but most of the abstracts and large-scale geographical pics don't do much for me. Boggles my mind to see some of the "in-the know" elite types chattering excitedly about them and (supposedly) spending thousands for prints! Am I missing something here?

    April 28, 2014

    • Chris F.

Mike,, they are usually praising and buying each others prints. Or trying to boost the value of images that are already in their collections. A common tactic of collectors and gallery owners

How about a seminar on self-publishing photo-book software???

Also.. the terms ,,,"Amateur" and "Pro" are not indicative of skill level.. just the pay scale.. It is not important which you call yourself,, only the quality of your work..

If you are not spending time in events like these,, If you are not going to galleries and openings, Art shows and lectures ,.. you are only hurting your own growth as an artist. And you are limiting your ability to get your own work out there ... No one is going to knock on your door and ask you if you want to hang your work ... YOU have to get out there ,, ,If you only want to do this as a hobby,, that's fine,,,There is nothing wrong with that,,, But I know that some of you have other plans.

One of the best ways to improve your own work is by going to as many of these types of events as possible. You have to know what OTHERS are doing and what the current trends are . That doesn't mean that you have to follow them.. But you do have to be aware.

Salvador, did you go to the Photo Independent show and see the photographers' work there? The quality of images on some of the photographers' work was amazing.

    April 28, 2014

  • Salvador

Zero points on quality of images, LA Meetup Street Photography talent would have blown them away!!! 100pts for experiencing the sound stages & back lot!!!! I'd attend next year!!!

    April 27, 2014

    • Chris F.

Salvador,, I agree. I see work in galleries and much of it doesn't come close to what I see in the groups work.. We have a lot of real talent in this group and they are getting better with each shoot we do.. .

    Hi Mandy
These events just show photographers' work. There won't be any photographers shooting any models at them. And the dress is casual. Have fun!

    April 21, 2014

  • Mandy P.

Hi there i would like to attend .are you shooting models on the street? And what do u success dressing .? Thanks

Please do not worry if you sign up for this event and then can't make it. This is an Open Event and you can come on Saturday or Sunday and at any time that is convenient for you. Or not show up if you decide not to come, even if you've signed up for it. No problem.

For this particular meetup there will be no host and you can wander around at will. This meetup is different than others in that it is not hosted.

The other meetups that are scheduled, planned and prepared by a host who will moderate or guide at those meetup are different. If you do sign up to one of those, please have the consideration to attend or cancel as soon as possible so another person on the waiting list can take your spot. This is very important.

I wanted to differentiate this meetup from the others and reiterate what Chris has discussed in his previous postings on the subject of attendance.

Sorry, money is quite tight this month. Just don't have the funds to attend this meetup.

Photo Independent will be a large group of photographers showing their work, and I imagine they will very much enjoy discussing things with another photographer or enthusiast who is admiring their photographs. I know I will. The event is not a snooty fine art gallery exhibit although fine art will certainly be displayed.

Curators and gallerists at Paris Photo might not want to engage in lengthy conversations but you never know. I went to Paris Photo last year and found them very gracious and anxious to spread the word about their gallery and the artists they represent.

When asking questions ,, please use common sense,,,Dont be rude,,, In a way you are representing the group. Don't monopolize their time or get in the way of sales ,,

    March 27, 2014

  • Chris F.

The worst they can do is refuse to answer,,, And so what if they do. My experience is that they are always happy to talk shop . Especially since this business depends on personal relationships, and they never really know who they are talking to.... Do whatever feels right to you at the time.. be tactful , don't over do it .

IMHO and past experience showing at fine art conventions , the exhibiters won't appreciate being peppered with questions. They are there to sell and recoup their costs.

Thanks for the kind words, Chris.

The Event Host for this one is Jerry,, Jerry is an excellent street shooter. you can see his work in our photo section.. And the photo of the dog eating ice cream that is currently on our home page is one of his,,,,

Randy, if you go to the Photo Independent site using the link I gave above, you'll see a heading called Exhibitors. It has a drop down menu and you can click on the Exhibitor Information tab for more info.

For any addition questions you may have, just send an email to Chris Davies at [masked]. See you there!

Maybe I'll see you there, Michelle. I'll be at Photo Independent. But at either venue, I think you'll have a lot of fun. And I'm glad you're recovering!

    March 22, 2014

    • Michelle

Thanks Jerry. That's the show I planned on going to.

      March 22, 2014

I'll be going the 27th also, as I have something planned for the 26th. It looks like I have to choose one exhibit or the other, since I can only afford one. Thanks Jerry for planning a great meetup. And Chris, I'm slowly recovering, so possibly by May, I can plan more meetups. :-)

    March 22, 2014

  • Michelle

Jerry, I'll come to the meetup on the 27th. I have something I want to do on the 26th. Thank you.

    Great Chris. See you there!

These are the kinds of meets and direction I want this group to go. Thanx Jerry.
