It's Back To L.A

Back to our favorite location..

As usual,, wear good walking shoes, we cover a lot of ground,

Go light,, don't carry a lot of gear,  it's going to be warm..

Make sure your batteries are charged and you have enough cards for the days shooting,,

A flash is ok for non-candid shots, and architectural shots. Do not use flash on people who do not know you are shooting them..

Be careful shooting kids,, it really pisses off parents and freaks out the kids. This isn't the L.A. Zoo.. Ask first. Or shoot from a distance..

What I pack:

Camera

24-105 lens

70-200 lens

32 gig card and one 8 gig card.

 1 Flash

water and sunscreen.

I feel like shooting,, anyone who wants to join me is welcome,,

We meet at 9AM,

between 9 and 9:30,, I will cover the basics and answer any questions..

 Parking is $5.00

I will wait 1/2 hr,

we move out at 9:30,

We will probably shoot for 2 to 3 hours.

Then I will move to another area, You are welcome to come along,

I usually don't stop shooting till the sun goes down..

Another great day shooting and walking around! And thanks for the tips Chris! Four of us got separated from the group... We ended up browsing in a flower market and farmers market before we went back.

Since you have 2 groups going on this event, you should send all the Cannon people in one group and the Nikon people in the other group......haha (just kidding) It should be a fun event...

    July 23

    • Khoa

      What a release! because I use a Pentax K5.

      July 25

    • Chris F.

Its not the camera,, its what you do with the camera.. There are a lot of people lugging big expensive cameras around who couldn't shoot a decent image if their lives depended on it.. And they will keep buying new cameras and blaming the camera.. My goal is to break that mindset.. Not promote a certain brand of camera,, I have no brand loyalty .. Most of the cameras out there are pretty damn good. Most of the time better than those using them..

Due to the Meetup Flake factor there is always room.. I see names on the list that from past experiencer I know will not show up..or will cancel before Saturday,, So Veronica,, You are in..

My favorite is Daido Moriyama! Dynamic black and whites with high contrast. Like his “abstract” photos/close-ups.
Joel Mererowitz- Captures people in daily life situations interacting focusing on a incident. Like his dynamic shots of the World Trade Center/powerful.

Low key? Our cameras costs more than some people's cars

      1 · July 23

    • Chris F.

Low key is a relative term.. basically it means ,,, leave the Rolexs and Patek Philippes at home.

      July 23

  • Tom E.

    Chris,
Didn't mean to open a bucket of worms, but sometimes it is appropriate. I do agree with what you say.

    1 · July 23

    • Chris F.

If you do help them out with a dollar or whatever,, Just make it clear that its not for the photo.. That it isn't a trade,,

      July 23

    • Chris F.

You haven't been out with us in awhile Tom,, Its
good to see you on the list....

      July 23

  • Chris F.

Looks like we have a really good group going on this one..

    1 · July 23

  • Tom E.

It will be good to see you again Jerry. I am an old school street shooter and use an old D70 with a 35mm lens. I always carry some $1 bills with me so when I shoot some of the street people I can show a little appreation. They can always use a dollar or two.

    July 23

    • Chris F.

Handing out $1 bills is not street photography..

      July 23

    • Chris F.

Handing out money is fine if that's what you want to do. Just don't do it in trade for photos..

      July 23

  • Jerry

I'm looking forward to this shoot and meeting everyone. Downtown is such a great location for street photography. Here are some tips I'd like to add:
Even though we're going to start shooting in the morning, it will warm up to about 86 degrees there in downtown LA, so if you can, bring a hat. And water and sunscreen like Chris mentioned.

Besides the obvious-comfortable shoes, I would also recommend leaving your flashy expensive watches, rings and other jewelry at home. I believe low-key is key for the street.

I travel a lot lighter than Chris regarding my gear. I bring one Nikon D4 body and one[masked] lens. Period. No camera bag, just a small fanny pack.

The Nikon D4 with the[masked] is not the most inconspicuous rig for street shooting, but 11 fps and that focal range work for me.

In my fanny pack are extra D4 batteries, 32GB CF cards, some aspirin, a lenspen and pen and paper.

    July 23

    • Chris F.

Excellent advice,,, Thanx for the heads up on the Bergamont show,,

      July 23

  • Chris F.

I like to shoot in the 24 to 50mm range because its easy to fast focus and the barrel distortion at the edges of the image and the wide angle of view pull the viewer into the image,, where as a longer lens compresses perspective and depth. Often on the street though,, you need that long lens,, With the[masked] and the[masked] I have the best of both worlds in 2 lenses..

    July 23

  • Chris F.

Like Jerry said,, dress down... the object is to blend in.. forget everything you have ever seen on TV and movies about what a "photojournalist" or photographer is supposed to look like.. dress for the street.. There are times when you need to carry 2 cameras,, this is not one of them..

    July 23

  • Chris F.

I also usually carry a VOX voice recorder for spot interviews if I need it, and model releases . Old habits are hard to break.. . I generally include the Garment District in this shoot..So we are definitely on the same page.

    July 23

  • Jerry

After the initial morning shoot, I'll most likely get lunch somewhere and then make my way down to the Garment District/Santee Alley area and shoot there for another 2-3 hours.

Then I'm going to head out to Santa Monica to Bergamont Station to meet 86 year old photographer Murray Garrett at his reception from 5-8pm at The Robert Berman Gallery. You're all invited!

He was a celebrity and event photographer in Hollywood from the 1940s to 1960s. Great b&w photographs of what was going on in Hollywood at that time.

Great opportunity to view b&w lighting and technique from another era. A lot of the photos on display will be candids. Both digital and silver gelatin prints.

Here's a link for info on the exhibit:
    http://www.robertbermangallery.com/exhibitions/2014-07-26_murray-garrett/

FYI, the Robert Berman Gallery is at Bergamont Station in Santa Monica.

If a spot opens up ill go! Haven't gone out in a long time

    July 22

  • Chris F.

If I can get another of our organizers to lead part of the group I can get everyone on the 2th date.. No promises but I'll work on it ..

    July 13

  • Chris F.

Looks like we have a lot of people on the waitlist.. Sooo.. I may have to schedule a 2nd shoot.. if anyone is interested..

    1 · July 13

  • Chris F.

While we are waiting to shoot on the 26th,, take a look at the work of Joel Meyerowitz.. and contrast it with the work of Daido Moriyama. Let me know what you think,,

    July 12

  • Daniel S.

Just remembered, won't be in town that weekend.

    July 6

  • Chris F.

Its going to be a good day for shooting , the streets are never the same from one moment to the next . Every day is different and unique. The images you catch will never happen again.. I'm looking forward to shooting with you .

    July 6

  • Daniel S.

    Going. Thanks

If you want to see the kinds of shots we get at this location ,, Then look in the photo pages of this group.
