Street Photography at Venice Beach

Hello all LA Street Photographers,

Venice Beach is a planet of its own, with people from all walks of life. Perfect place for people watching, it is by extension also a perfect place for street photography. If you feel shy pointing your camera at someone's face, then the sheer number of people, tourists, and street performers on a sunny sunday afternoon should  make you less nervous.

We will be meeting Sunday 06/24/12 at 2:15pm in front of the Subway parking lot and walk down in direction of the Venice Beach Pier. Street parking is free on Sunday, and you may have to park a couple of blocks away and walk over. We won't be leaving until 3pm to give the time for people to get situated. From 2:15pm - 3pm, we can take the time for some introductions and have a Q&A session for those who have questions about camera settings, etc.

What to bring: comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen, extra memory cards and extra batteries. I would recommend leaving the heavy gear at home, and just bring one compact body and lens. Being inconspicuous always works to your advantage...

Here are some photos from my last outing @ Venice Beach:

I don't get it. I went there and could not find the parking at least 10 blocks away. Yet I am looking at the posted pictures and it does not look crowded. Where are all the people?

No worries Larry. I think each organizer experiences photography differently and we all bring something to the table. We'd be glad to have you if you can make it.

Shooting in PUBLIC places..a tip for you that'll help. Use a wide angle & learn the golden rule of composition REMEMBER the wider the lens the closer you need to be or you get a lot of DEAD SPACE...and keep the lens at least a foot off peoples heads or they turn into EGGS..haha if you use the RULE then you never point the camera at the subject and it appears you are aiming somewhere else..your subject is off to the left or right. shoot & hold camera up & pass appears you werent shooting them

I find the crowd to be more interesting than the performers. There is something raw and unscripted about people that I feel drawn to.

HSU, it was a joke to Larry's "leaving the heavy gear at home"
I have been with Larry there at least twice.
Larry, if I remember correctly you paid the guy with a finger $20.
    I will charge less........

People if you bring some business cards and hand them after you shoot when they ask for money..they usually say cool for pics. its a 2 way street..if you don't give money then give an image...these people are working (sidewalk shows) the general public using the weights or equipment won't mind. they dislike the TOURIST taking advantage of them. Something for something.YEAH groups like us look like we got off a tour bus..xcept me...haha I scare them!

The whole point of this meetup is for people to have fun, meet other photographers, and learn from each other. If shooting up close makes your stomach turn, then just shoot from a distance you feel comfortable with.

Hey Eugene. We'd be glad to have you. If you don't feel comfortable shooting up close, and want to use your 500mm that's totally fine with me. My opinion is that photos shot up close are engaging the viewer in a way that telephoto inherently can't capture, due to the compression effect. All in all, if you respect the subject that you are shooting, agree to delete a photo when asked, maintain a certain distance, and carry a smile on your face, no one should really get offended.

If I decided to come I will bring 500mm with me. I can snipe from the long distance. Don't have to offend anyone with "in your face" photography. Though it would be hard to take pictures like above from below. And after I can walk to the beach and take surfers pictures too.

Like HSU mentioned there is such a diversity of Culture here. Sidewalk shows are everywhere, The skate pool, weight lifting, shopping and surfing is close. Great pizza can be found near the skate pool with many other restaurants. Some of you might recall the movie the DOGtown Z-boyz (z for zephyr surfboards or POP (pacific ocean park). REMEMBER...the sidewalk shows are WORKing folks. If you stand around too long and take pictures they will ask for a donation. Have fun...HSU!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
