Gourmandise Cooking School has a terrific program called 'Follow That Chef' and it is free of charge. You will need to sign up on their website: signing up on the meet-up does not get you a spot with this event or with the school.
The link to the event I picked, called 'Civil Eats', is about how one can eat for $46 a week, the allowance that the food stamp program for one person. If the link doesn't work for you, then cut and past this: http://www.cookingschoolsofamerica.com/thegourmandiseschool/index.php?page=classes#1016
This is a long program, follow the chef at the farmer's market then you get to cook and taste and follow by a discussion. So the program is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There is a break at 12:30 p.m for us to grab some lunch before the discussion. We can decide where to go at that time.
To be considerate of the people who put this together as well as other potential attendees, please do not sign up if you don't think you can stay for the whole program.
This event seems to be linked with a movie that came out in March called 'A Place At the Table', documentary about hunger in America. Here is a film clip on it. ( Cut and paste the link) http://www.fandango.com/movie-trailer/aplaceatthetable-trailer/158945/2188404961
View it and pass it on please. It has been over 40 years since President Nixon declared war on hunger ...http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/opinion/perspectives/declare-war-on-hunger-again-403166/
