To celebrate World Vegan Day, I've arranged a meal at Riverside Vegetaria (who're kindly giving us 20% off), London's best vegetarian restaurant of 2012.
Non-vegans are welcome but, considering this is WVD, please choose only vegan options from the menu.

In a bizarre twist, having emailed Ritchie of Riverside Vegetaria a spreadsheet of our costs, I received the following - "Hi Richard, you were given 20% off the total food bill not on the drinks, total food bill was £213 50 the discount was £42.7, total drinks bill was £70.05, 10% service charge was £30.25, total you paid was £271.00". If that's the case, we only owed 10p, not the claimed £16.70!

To be honest it's such a messup, I do not know what Christine wants to do but I do not want the stress of bill problems at a Christmas meal so if one is organised I am very hesitant to go now (even though I love the Vegetaria when it is just a tiny number of us)! But we would like to do SOMETHING for a group Christmas do, don't you agree? Does anyone have any ideas?
If we'd been aware of the lack of discount on drinks, I'm sure we'd have been okay... that said, I'd rather ask what The Cheeky Pea can do for us, and maybe go there this year. Anyway, Napak and I will be going to Nitin's annual xmas meal in Croydon, and I've been cheeky and gotten space for 10 Meetup guests, so will add that as a Meetup soon :-)
0 · November 18, 2013
KRveg will be holding their annual xmas meal at Riverside on Saturday December 14th (the day before Nitin's), so people can always attend that :-) You'll need to book with Martin (see http://www.krveg.org....) before November 30th. I might list it on here (I've Martin's approval to list KRveg events), for info only, if I get time...
1 · November 18, 2013
Ah good it is great to know ppl have some choices then for Christmas meals. I have not heard anything from Christine about any plans this year and did not want to put upon her with it anyway. There is also one at 222 here but it is wait list only now at present..http://www.meetup.com...If you have time to organise something Richard it would be lovely but no pressure.. Cheeky Pea might be nice, but do not think I will really have time to get involved in organising anything additional to what I've been doing already!
I can't see Martin's meal on his site only the meal at Greenz on the 23rd of this month..
Yes, he's only sent it to his email list so far. I'll try to list Greenz too.
0 · November 19, 2013
It's a shame Martin (http://www.meetup.com...) never took up my invitation to join us and post KRveg events (I also suggested to Shabari that she might like to do it).
1 · November 19, 2013
I've mentioned to Shabari at least once about how we would like her to get more active on the Meet up group to promote her group's meals and events.. she just never really gives a real answer as to why not! I just think some of us live online more than others and she does not go online very much at all!
Oops, we've veered off-topic, best to leave it there; we can't make people do things, it's just a shame KRveg remains in the shadows.

Sorry Thank U Laura thought your name was Cheryl!x Richard just checked Suma- slight worry! Angelic range ad on home page say vegan 2 of them contain EGG?! Not sure x
0 · November 3, 2013
You're quite right Claire, all the Angelic entries that list ingredients have egg. Unfortunately, the producers are responsible for adding product info to the site, not Suma (hence all the disclaimers!). I always double-check, if I'm in doubt. I'll let Suma know, so they can pass it on. Angelic are a new Highland based company, their website (http://angelicglutenf...) isn't live yet but, interestingly, their Farcebook page (https://www.facebook.c...) says 'Angelic Gluten Free specialises in a range of gluten, wheat, dairy and egg free cookies and savoury biscuits'.
An update on Angelic from Suma - "I've spoken to our buyer and apparently there was a little older packaging left in the system that wasn't egg free, but it is now." - they also said they'll work on updating the ingredients (I just checked one, and it still mentions egg). http://sumawholesale....
Someone said that the 222 in Kensington is good, I've never been but willing to give it a shot. Any idea of dates, I'm already double booked with some dates in December. Glad the bill is sorted Richard.
Yes, it's a good venue, but it would be nice to stick nearer to (former, i.e. pre-Greater London) Surrey :-)
Hi Richard, Anna e-mailed me to post a comment for her as she had some problems posting it:"Lovely evening and to meet everyone on Friday. So sorry Richard you were left with sorting the bill and got home so late. Jan paid for me with her card, she had tofu & potato curry £9.50, and 2 glasses of Bergerac white wine @ £4.75 each. I had a camomile tea, £2.10, aubergine dip (blackboard) I think £6.25, and masala dosa, £8.50. Janet paid £37. Zuzana had a vegan lasi, a peppermint tea, a Jamaican stew and a cinamon cake. Please let me know if we owe you. I think we must insist in future that we have seperate bills, we bring them good business, and it will be much quicker in the end. Thanks for all your efforts Richard.Anna"

Sorry Beata, I meant to thank you for passing Anna's message on.
The only thing I can think of is the garlic bread because we didn't pay for it?x
0 · November 4, 2013
From experience I recall they often give some complementary garlic bread there anyway, so maybe that is what happened this time.
0 · November 5, 2013
Yes, the garlic bread is complimentary.
Oops, I think I meant complImentary, not complEmentary, what was I thinking? I usually pride myself on getting my spellings and homophones right!
Lovely to meet Richard & children, Janet, Anna, Suzanna & Cheryl. Good basic food & Lovely conversation & Thank U 4 all your advice xx by the way sorry for Richard. Let me know if we owe you. Michael & I had 2 vegan banana lasies, 1 fresh squeezed oj, lentil curry on board, pasta & 1 crumble & icecream xx

As well as recommending people join Volentia (http://volentia.com/), if they hadn't already, I also mentioned 'satellite' feed lot photos (http://mishkahenner.com/filter/works/Feedlots), which may be colourised, and someone else mentioned Suma Wholesale, who I use for my buying group (http://www.meetup.com/SurreyVeg/messages/boards/thread/21517292#[masked]).

Hi richard no guest Im afraid the lady in question car broke down.Sorry to hear about discrepancy. Mine was £9.50 and £4.40.I gave you £14 if i remember, also I paid cash for my red wine on arrival at 6.45 downstairs. It is not right you are out of pocket, this always happens in my experience , how much are you out of pocket?
Cheers Dennis, maybe Gemma was with Cheryl, it's not important, just nice to have an accurate total for people's interest. I trust your friend was able to get her car fixed and get home safely. With the 10% off your food, your total was £12.51, so technically we owe you £1.49. As I couldn't have a copy of the (written) bill, it's just as well I'd made our own list (checked against theirs), so we know what everyone had/paid.
P.S. It's okay, your red wine wasn't on the final bill, so not counted twice.
Isn't Gemma one of Jenny's daughters, or was it a different Gemma? I was not there so I do not know!
I won't be able to come after all, sorry. Hope you all have a great time though, and I'll be with you in spirit, since it's World Vegan Day!! :-)
0 · October 31, 2013
No problem Maggie, at least we got to see you on Sunday.
0 · November 1, 2013
Yes, nice meeting up with everyone, shame about the cock-up with the food at the Noble Vine *ahem!* At least you know in advance that problem won't occur at the Vegetaria! :-D
LOL famous last words Maggie; turned out the discount didn't apply to drinks, a fact I discovered after everyone had paid and left (I did my usual list of people's costs). The outstanding £40 was clearly too much and, after much checking, I found they'd overcharged by £18! Long story short, they reckon we owe £16.70... I'll do one last totalling of what we owed/paid and try to sort it out with Ritchie...
The most annoying thing is that the kids were up so late, because of the time wasted trying to find the discrepancy... we ended up leaving after they'd closed, had to wait 45 minutes for the last bus, and didn't get home 'till 12:40am this morning...
LOL, oh dear! So this time it wasn't the food that was the problem, it was the bill! Did you have to stay behind to do all the washing-up? :-D Eating out never seems to be easy, does it? Even in the veggie places! I remember well the now-closed Karahi Spices, which did excellent and cheap veggie/vegan food, but often the service was so bad it could really ruin the evening. If I had come I could have given you a lift back in my car, as you are on my route anyway, so let me know if you need a lift another time, if it is an event we are both going to, and I might be able to help you out.
Were you stuck sorting out the bill then Richard? They really ought to be able to get things right by doing separate bills for ppl who are together in the group eg one for Cheryl and Oli, one for you and your family, and so on, and yet they always refuse to do this! I do not understand the reason! Christine usually organises a Christmas meal there but it is putting us off going as a largeish group again if there are always going to be problems with the bill! How come you are the one out of pocket? Did you and your kids alone stay late to sort all this out? That is not fair... not at all.. someone without kids with them should have taken on that task I think!
Thanks for the offer of a lift Maggie, I'll bear that in mind for the future.
You know me Lesley, I'd have stayed on anyway, until I was sure everything was settled... it was just unfortunate that the kids were dragged into it.
Hi all, rather than continue to reply individually, I'll clarify the situation here: Other than an overlooked fresh orange juice and a few prices out by pennies, everything was paid for. The issue is the drinks discount, or lack thereof. As such, I'm told there is £16.70 outstanding. These things happen, I'll go through everything tomorrow, and email Ritchie, in the hope of sorting it out, so please don't worry. If we end up having to chip in the 10% on drinks, I'll get back to people individually.
I'm sorry you ended up with that problem Richard...I don't understand why restaurants don't do separate bills. Maybe if enough groups of people made that a condition of booking, they would have to give in and agree to do it. Maybe people should post what they had to eat, so you can contact people if there is a shortfall in what they paid - it isn't fair if you have to pay it all! My meal was the jamaican stew, apricot and almond cake, and I just had tap water to drink. If there was a shortfall in mine, just message me and I will transfer the money to you
Don't worry Laura, I'm sure I'll straighten it out and, if not, I know what everyone had thanks to my list and our very helpful waitress, who had a very good memory :-) Their was only one overlooked item, but if was the non-discounting of drinks that was the real problem (along with that £18 overcharge!).
*oops, 'there was' and 'it was', obviously (I wish I could edit comments on here!).
Oh no Richard I had no idea you were having problems with the bill. Did you have to pay the short fall yourself? Also I'm sorry you got back so late, especially with the kids! :(
Just tweaked the numbers attending... I'm assuming Gemma was your guest Dennis?
Me and Emma and Oli are on our way but stuck in traffic
1 · November 1, 2013
I trust you got back safely.
Lovely to see everyone, just sorry I didn't get to chat to you all (apologies for the kids', err, 'boisterous' behaviour!) :-)
Great place and amazing choc fudge dessert and ice cream :)
2 · November 2, 2013
I thought the meal at the restaurant was fantastic! The staff were superb. The company was great. Definatly recommend this restaurant again.
I'm on my way, but will be late as stuck in traffic. See you soon
I will be there bringing my 9 month old with me and possibly my partner if ok?x
The more the merrier :-)
I've given you +2 guests, just in case we get some last minute takers, as we can't go over 24 due to seating restrictions upstairs.
Sorry just seen this message from you. Thank U Richard x
No problem, I look forward to meeting you, Michael and Filomena :-)
Cheryl(?) and I both confirmed our attendance with Ritchie last night. I noticed that RSVPs were closed yesterday (possibly it was set up that way), so I opened them again, as I've been promoting this further... just hope no-one missed out.
I hope more people come along I feel this is going to be a really good turn out to night! I'm bring a non vegan who wants to be vegan!
If anyone that's driving would like to offer a lift, please do comment on where you're coming from (sorry for the last minute suggestion, we'll try to sort out a better way of organising car shares). The kids and I are currently coming up from Great Bookham by 465 bus (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/maps/buses/?r=465).
Im bringing a vegan friend
Great stuff Dennis, all welcome... as long as they're prepared to eat vegan ;-)
Anne Marie, I was wondering if you (and Janet too) have also considered coming to the pub meet in Walton this Sunday which is doubling as my birthday meal (sadly I can't make it for the WVD meal due to being away visiting relatives in Cheshire). Ken would like to come to the pub meet but he would need a lift from East Twickenham and wondered if you are coming to both meals if you could help please with a lift for him to Walton?
Glad to see that numbers are picking up for both meals anyway - I was a little worried them both being less than a week apart!
0 · October 25, 2013
I've added Jenny to come as my guest as she said she was able to make it!! So hopefully 10 of us are coming if you can all make it!!! Look forward to seeing/meeting you all on world vegan day!!!
1 · October 11, 2013
I might. I can't say for sure though. If it all gets booked up, so be it.
0 · October 2, 2013
You can always let Cheryl know a bit nearer the time when you do decide.
1 · October 2, 2013
Would be lovely to see you Andrew, it's been a while.
0 · October 7, 2013
The kids and I are a 'Maybe' for now :-)
1 · October 3, 2013
Ok as long as I know numbers by 30th so I can book the table :)
0 · October 3, 2013
As we're confirmed for upstairs (see my earlier comment/s), with its 24 seats, we no longer need to 'book' a table; though it's good to give the restaurant some idea of numbers nearer the day (that said, be prepared for 'no shows').
1 · October 7, 2013
Sounds great. I have RSVPd Yes, but it is a Maybe really, hope that is OK. I will come if I can. Aren't you coming then Lesley?
It'll be great if you can come! Please let me know by 30th for definite so I know numbers so I can book the table :)
Sorry we are now definitely not back from Cheshire until too late in the evening even though back on the 1st from a flying two day visit to family over half term, even that was hard to fit in as I already scheduled a protest I am organising against the deer cull for earlier that week, so something had to give and this was it, really a shame but can't be avoided.
That's brilliant Richard!!! Thank you so much!!
I need to know numbers pretty soon as to book tables so please RSVP when you can!
Let me know when you need to close to new replies as you will need cut off date with booking. Best to contact the restaurant now and ask how much notice they need.
Cut off day I need to know numbers by is 30th October and I have just found out that if your a member of the vegan soc you get 20% off your meal!!! As long as you have a valid vegan doc membership card!!! Thanks
Is midday on 30th OK for the closing of new RSVPs which I have set for now?
I've spoken with the manager, Ritchie, and asked him to allow us to use upstairs again (there was nothing written in the book, and we don't want to miss out); that way we're guaranteed a maximum of 24 seats. The main issue now is making sure we don't have too many guests (I've set a limit of 24, and added a waiting list, but it doesn't appear to be showing up my end)! We can give them a better idea of numbers nearer the time.
(Sorry Cheryl, I didn't see your earlier comments until now, the curse of 'View all ... replies')
As usual we can rely on Richard to tart it up, I can set up events but not able to put in the complicated bits like links and photos! It looks much nicer now!
2 · October 3, 2013
LOL How did you know it was me?! Hope it's okay Cheryl... I've made you the host and given you event organiser 'powers' :-) Theoretically, I've set this to a waiting list when it reaches 24 RSVPs, as we're going to be upstairs as usual. Ritchie is kindly giving us 20% too :-)
Oops, that was 20% 'off'... not 20% more salad than usual LOL
Is anyone going from Staines?
No but I can ask my partner if we can pick you up if you like?
You could also ask if Beata is going.
Ohh I figure out how to reply lol...too late now I've txt you x
Next: Invite friends
This is your group, please do suggest relevant events; visiting a vegan-friendly venue, and fancy some possible company, why not make it a Meetup?!
I recommend turning off unnecessary email notifications, and using your Meetup calendar. See Pages for other advice, such as updating your location, and running a buying group.
We're proud to host events for Worcester Park (WPveg), Kingston and Richmond (KRveg), East (ESveg), North (NSveg) and Twickenham and North (TWandKTveg) Surrey groups, and Croydon (CVS), Guildford (GVS) and University of Surrey (UniSveg) veg socs, amongst others.
I hope you enjoy the group, if you do please tell your friends, if you don't please tell me!
P.S. Thanks to Robb for 'hosting' us; 'Organizer dues' cover three groups, so I pay him £40 a year. Likewise, thank you to the Dove family, for generously covering half of 2016's costs.
