Jeff what will we be doing this week. Since I cannot make the August 4 show and last week all we did was practice for that show I was wondering if that is what we are going to do again this week. Playing out is important, but we should have a conversation as to how much we want to play out and how much it should effect what were doing at these sessions. How much should these be jam sessions and how much should they be rehearsals. What does everyone else think?

If Greg shows me how to make that piano sound like an organ, I could figure out the organ and electric piano parts

I've been working on the POMH intro and pretty much have it down. Here's a few tips on what we need in the Black Magic Woman intro. The keyboard part that Rob has been playing on guitar is a repeating two-bar phrase. At the end of the phrase, the last note should be held for the last two beats of the bar. This held note has been missing and that is what is throwing off the timing. Also, there should be two drum hits that coincide with this held note. I think Brian has the bass part about right - but guitar/bass/drums all have to be on the same page before I even start to play.

I just downloaded Robert Gordon's version of Fire. You'll note that the first verse is just the bass and guitar, no drums and rhythm. It's something to think about. Y'all play good tonight. I'll see you guys when I get back. Chow

Jeff which takes on the new files did you feel were klunckers

I forwarded them to a lot of friends i know and got great feed back on all of them.

they were more or less cold takes on each song and can be improved with some time but even to my tone deaf ears they sounded decent.

    July 17, 2013

    • Jeff R.

Dom, I thought that the timing and vocals on Black magic Woman were not up to par. I know we could have done it better. The problem is that I don't think Chris is going to do another take of this session. What is there is it. Also, Tush's vocals were not good. The rest of were all right on that song though. Maybe Chris could do some fancy editing or something.

OK people here's another effing list. This will be the revised list for Ed's car show on 8/4. I'm not sure if there will be one set or two. I divided in half because I heard somewhere (most likely here) that Sandy can only come in the afternoon. If that's the case, then we'll do a set without Sandy and one with. These are songs that we are very familiar with and play well. Bryan, I know you hate lists but we have to be organized to an extent.

    third part.

Announce the song, the song's key, and even chords if someone is not familiar with the song.
Breaks go around clockwise. Each player, regardless of musical ability, gets a turn.
Only one instrument should be playing the break at a time.
Players may skip their turn at a break at their discretion and not the discretion of others. Signal your pass or shake your head.
Passing your turn means your turn for this break only. A new turn comes up with each rotation
Players should clearly signal the next player in the circle if they want him/her to take over.
Jams are not closed band practice sessions, no one gets excluded by weird tunes
nobody but a select few know…
Anyone participating in a disruptive way may be politely told how to follow the jam etiquette, or to leave.thank you !!!

Well see Brian it's like this. Ever since dropping 65 lbs. two years ago, I don't eat pizza on regular basis. But I allow myself a couple of slices every 3 or 4 months. It's gotta be the real thing though. No Pizza Hut or Dominos for me, thank you.

    Here's a stupid question,what's a g7? Is it just the Octive?

    July 13, 2013

    • Rob M.

Yes, if you see "G anything" you would usually play a G on the bass. But if you see something like G/F, then would play an F. The note after the "slash" is the note the bass should play.

i am posting a list of the things we expect for the jams after a few chats with members i think this is what as to be done thanks to all who understand that this is for a better experience overall !!!

    Jam Sessions and Etiquette
the primary Goal is having fun and making music together
please Always keep sight of this important point
No attitudes allowed. If everyone is not enjoying themselves
then something is wrong and should be corrected.
Introduce yourself to the other participants. Network,
communicate and enjoy yourself in a friendly,
    musical environment.
Do not watch from the sidelines you learn by doing so
get in there and jam !!!
If there is a jam leader identified,
    please follow their instructions.

    second part ...

Keep the volume at an acceptable level and lower your volume
When someone else takes a break , if you can’t hear the soloist playing the break
The singer the drummer etc. then lower your volume.
Pay particular attention to instruments like violins, banjos, brass etc.
You're playing in a small space and not a stadium and we don't want to go deaf.
Too many of the same instruments (guitars)? Playing all at the same time can sound bad,
so consider tag teaming over a certain amount of bars, rotate, even leave the circle after a few tunes and encourage side liners to take your place.
Backup should be in the back and not trying to overpower the soloist.

I've been reviewing the song list and see that I've been selected to do some songs I don't know. They are Key to the Highway and Red House. I did Good Loving and it was a disaster. I do not feel comfortable with these songs. Being that the gig is less than a month away, I'd like to ask if someone else can do those songs...or if you're not committed to doing them I'd like to request three other songs that I do know. Stormy Monday, Tusch and I Just Want to Make Love to you. We have rehearsed Tusch and Stormy Monday a lot. Have never done I Just Want to Make love to you...Not sure if that would be too much to ask?

that's probably the best, it would probably good to have the set list ready and in our back pocket for future things, like the big uso show for one,,and we can add songs as we go,,it would be nice if we had better communication at the pracs in between songs,,but with that said, this is a great bunch of players and I think we really got something good here, and fun,not that im some established player,,but you guys are the best bunch I have ever played with, thanks!
