Hooray Oyster Bay! Gold Coast Riding II

Join us in our backyard as we explore Oyster Bay, Brookville, and Oyster Bay Cove. This combines a popular road cycling route with some off the beaten path roads that most people don't see. Yes this is a hilly ride, but there are long distances of flat riding to offset those hills and give your legs a rest. This ride is NOT recommended for those who are new with hills, or are slow to recover after a challenging hill. We will pass the Planting Field, lots of beautiful houses and estates, and stop at Sagamore Hill, home of Theodore Roosevelt. The two restroom stops are in Syosset (mile 10), and Sagamore hill (mile 18). The total mileage is about 23 miles.

Kudos again to Drew and Bridget for organizing another great ride. P.S. The Caribbean Red Lentil soup at Sweet Tomato Cafe, around the corner from the Oyster Bay LIRR station, was scrumptious. Next time lets catch the Rough Rider fighting turkey from Sagamore Hill and ask Sweet Tomato to cook us a nice Turkey dinner.

Me and my bike (equipped with a big 32-teeth back gear for climbing) love hilly rides. :D Great fun. A few of us (Bridget, Tammy and others) were discussing the amount of hand pressure needed to brake a road bike with drop-bar control levers, and I suggested getting brake pads that are grippier so it might take less hand strength to brake: http://www.meetup.com/LI-Social-Biking/messages/boards/thread/45880512#[masked]

ahhh...Thank you Tom I am going to get the "grippier brake pads" to help me.. since I have softer grip on my left hand that puts pressure on that hand when I use my drop-bar control lever to stop. The pressure on my hand is giving me pain.. will let you know if this works.

Lovely ride, friendly people but beware the hostile attack turkey at Sagamore Hill (but he gave us quite a few laughs), cozy beach, entertaining surprise lecture on Teddy Roosevelt by park ranger at Sagamore Hill. The weather was just perfect.

Thanks for joining us today. Yes one of our most challenging rides to date, but hopefully you were rewarded with friendliness, nice scenery and a little bit of history. This was the A group today, everyone did a great job, which makes our job just that more enjoyable. Special shout out to Terry's Bro Dan, who landscaped her flood torn property, and than rode 20+ miles from Smithtown to start this ride. Keep and eye out for Gold Coast III coming soon to a theatre near you....

There are no restroom facilities at the LIRR station, however, there is a dunkin donuts on Rt 106 next to the CVS before you arrive in Oyster Bay hamlet.

Aw shucks, a change in other plans forced me to cancel. I guess I will be doing the Bethpage Polo ride again on Sunday. Any takers.

Not to scare anyone off, but we start the ride with a 1+ mile climb. After that it levels off, and then hills are sprinkled in strategically along the way. So if you like to start off nice and easy, this is not the ride for you. That being said you will be rewarded, but if hills are not your thing consider skipping this ride.
