Memorial Day Airshow at Jones Beach (Zach's Bay)

We will meet at the Dinghy Shop. (Please unload your boat and equipment and park your car down the block by the field).

This is an Intermediate trip - 15 Miles RT. We will be beaching at Zach's Bay for the afternoon, so bring a towel or blanket to sit on, lunch, drinks, snacks etc. Don't forget your sunscreen and camera!

There will be a lot of boat traffic, we mostly stay to the shallows where the boats can't go but we do have many channels to cross!  If you do not have a Marine Radio please let me know.  Also, as with all our trips.  PFD's are a must!  And they must be ON your person and buckled.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to email me directly or post below. :)

It is Official, anyone wanting to do the shorter trip from Jones Beach Field 10. I will be leading this group. We will be launching @ 9AM, There is lots of parking , but no rentals available . We will meet up in Zach's Bay with the rest of the group. "You must Have and Wear your PFD" it gets very choppy out there , specially on the way back . Please let me know if your going to be at Jones Beach, so we don't leave with out you. I hope I have answered any question you may have. I can be reached @[masked], For last minute changes on day of trip.

Does anyone want to launch from Jones Beach (field 10 I think)?

    1 · May 8, 2014

    • Patti

Mike - Jody doesn't think I should go from Dinghy shop because of the long distance and rough water.

      May 16, 2014

It's been a short season so far , it's a good plan. You will build up to longer trips as the season gets underway .

Jody. Thanks for sharing. This is also posted on the Facebook page as well. Looks like a huge no wake zone.

I can meet everyone launching from Joes Beach Field 10 and make sure we stay together, for the crossing. Last time we did this we launched @ 10 AM. If we have a large group of people , I'll take charge of the group from there, be aware that returning to Field 10 after the air show can be tough due to the boat traffic.

If I can get out of work Monday I'll be going, but at this time it looks unlikely. I'll confirm closer to the date if I can in fact make it.

    May 18, 2014

    • Rich

Chris, are you aware that this trip is Saturday and not Monday ?

      2 · May 18, 2014

    • Chris K.

lol, yeesh. You'd think I could read that giant text at the top stating the date. Thanks for pointing it out, RIch! I think I was stuck in my head about having to work Monday on Memorial Day weekend.

So...I won't be there for sure. I have 7 hours of school and 5+ hours of work.

Have a great paddle though everyone!

VHF radios are required for this trip. It's probably time for me to own one. Experienced marine VHF users: what are the 3 "must have" features for my new handheld? I'll use it for close to shore trips like our Air Show paddle. Ease of use for an inexperienced owner a plus. Reply to my private Email if you know it. Thanks.

C'mon steve. That's seems a bit harsh & wasn't my intent at all here. Was only trying to minimize confusion. If 16 people have already RSVP'd for this 8:00 trip (starting at Dinghy shop, & led by Liz & Mike) but only 12 say they are showing up, then fine; i just don't want to be waiting around for someone who decides last minute that 2mi is better than 7-8mile trip for them. As for mike's "one" group may best comment, i guess i just misinterpreted that. I'm totally looking forward to seeing EVERYone that day. PS: I do have an extra VHF if someone needs for the day.

So the Coast Guard just posted some restriction maps for the weekend of the airshow. I looked them over and this will not affect our group. The area of Zach's Bay will have a No Entry access to boat traffic AFTER 3pm. They are not throwing people out, they are just making outbound traffic only to reduce the possibility of collisions. Then they basically made an area from Freeport to Alhambra to Jones Beach a no wake zone. The standard no entry safety box will be in place on the ocean side of Jones.

This is a no joke paddle! Even when the weather is good the sea conditions will be VERY rough from the massive amount of powerboat traffic. Please make sure that you have rough water experience before signing up for this trip. Spray skirts and ALL safety gear is a must.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
