The Sauerkraut Making Event

This event takes place at Phil’s place in Lynbrook.

The long awaited (at least by me, that is) time for community sauerkraut making is finally here folks. We do need everyone here on time to start so please keep that in mind when you are making your plans.  It is a very organized group event and we want it to be very pleasant and team oriented.  It is hard to have someone start at the beginning (like washing their veggies) when the rest of us are many steps ahead.

I have a very large garage where we will be working.  Some will be chopping, some will be shredding.  I have a food processor.  We could definitely use at least one more, if some of you can bring yours.  I will be doing all the stirring with gloves a mask and this year (Thanks to our friend Steve) a hair cap.

Lets pay homage to the microorganism kingdom!

What to bring?

  • 5-6 heads of cabbage preferably green.  If we get enough red maybe we will make a separate batch (very colorful)

  • 1 head of cauliflower

  • 1-2 bunches of celery

  • a bunch of carrots

  • 2 white onions

  • 2-3 bulbs garlic

  • 2 daikon radishes, or jicama, or turnips

  • a bunch red radishes

  • big pieces of ginger (about the size of your hand)

  • Hot (really hot) peppers- lots- habaneros, chiles, jalapenos... (optional)

  • Horseradish  (optional)

  • Fresh dill (optional)

  • Mustard seeds (we will crush them in my coffee grinder first)

  • caraway seeds

  • Celtic sea salt

  • Bring with you at least one LARGE mouth jar (large enough to stick your fist in it) one gallon.  Some smaller ones to make some experimental batches with the other herbs and spices.

  • And bring some extra cutting boards and knives.

Thanks for a wonderful time...making space in the garden to grow cucumbers so we can all do pickles next time! Anything I left there can be given away (except for the jazzy music disc named "BLISS"--did I leave it there?) or put it in a box & I'll give stuff to Paws for a Cause...people can also drop stuff there in Freeport on South Main Street to help shelter animals...I am REALLY going to clean out the car THIS time! P.S. Phil...looks like you can use some plants...need tomato plants?

Your very welcomed Robin and Annie,

You should wait at least 2 weeks to open it and start using it. Let us know how it goes. If you have any questions in that time post them and we will try to answer them.

I can bring cutting boards, knives, shower caps, wide mouth jars...I'll go to BJ's (or even FAIRWAY)and see if they have organic cabbage..got organic carrots and I grow organic peppers...and I won't forget the dill...any thing else needed?

    May 2, 2013

    • John

      I didn't know this was a shower.

    Thanks for asking Robin,

It is preferred but just do you best. If you cannot find something that you like to bring organic then being the other. I cannot find hot peppers that are organic, but I am going to use them anyway.

We will be blessing and healing everything with our intention before we begin. If we truly do our best to work with nature, nature will work with you.

See you Sunday at high noon.
