This Pre-Inaugural Soul Concert features Choklate, a Seattle, WA based songstress, who writes her own music, has already taken the breath away from many listeners around the world. Choklate infuses her sultry alto voice with hard, progressive beats and very real lyrics—sparking many different kinds of emotions.
The release of her self-titled Cd in 2006 and its subsequent re-release in 2008 created a tremendous global buzz for Choklate’s music and live performances. She has toured Sweden, France, Italy and the UK. Choklate has performed at the Blue Note (NYC), Jazz Alley (Seattle) and appeared with Bilal, Boys II Men, Roy Ayers and many more. She has headlined her own U.S. tour and continues to stretch the boundaries of Soul music. Choklate will light up the stage with songs from both of he previous releases “Choklate” and “To Whom It May Concern”, in addition to songs from her latest release “Fly”.
Named Soultracks Performing Vocalist of the year AND Jet Magazines Break-out artist of 2011, YahZarah aka Ms. Purple St. james, is a classically trained R&B singer-songwriter based out of Durham, NC. Born and raised in Washington, DC, YahZarah started singing at the age of seven in her church choir. In 1998, she began touring as a background singer for Erykah Badu. In 2003 she released “Blackstar,” on the Three Keys label which reached #44 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
Ms. Purple St. James has been called upon to bless the stage with outstanding artists such as Jaguar Wright, Floetry, Musiq Soul Child, Chaka Kahn, Amel Larrieux, Goapele, Talib Kweli,
Rahsaan Paterson, Jazmine Sullivan, Raheem Davaughn, R Kelly, Common, Bilal Oliver, The Roots, Erykah Badu and others.
Snuhgie Stocks is an DC native who began singing for his first audiences at the age of three and went on to graduate from the renowned Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts. He found musical inspiration all around him. He chose to project inner joy in his music with songs about love, relationships and inspiration. Imagine the 70’s music of Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire… Mix that with contemporaries like Ne-yo or Maxwell then you’ll have a pretty good idea of the Snúhgie Stocks sound.
