Winter Ponds and Lakes hike in F. Gilbert State Forest with L.L. Bean Mansfield

Please join L.L. Bean Mansfield on this rather easy winter ramble on Sunday January 26th at 10AM. Because High Rock Road isn’t maintained for winter use, we’ll be meeting in the main parking area at F. Gilbert Hills State Forest park headquarters at 45 Mill Street, Foxboro, MA. We’ll be visiting Upper Dam Pond, Lakeview Pond and Sunset Lake. These first two bodies of water are located in the Harold B. Clark Town Forest contiguous to the state forest. Sunset Lake is situated in the northwest section of F. Gilbert Hills SF. Our trek will also take us through parts of the Cocasset Brook Greenbelt and Governor Meadow. After visiting these bodies of water some well traveled hiking/mountain bike trails will loop us back to our vehicles. This hike should run the full 3 hours and cover about 5 miles. Should there be enough snow on the trails, we’ll plan on bringing our snowshoes.
The minimum age for attending is 8 (Children 8-15 yrs must have a participating adult with them, 16-17 yrs must have a parent/guardian sign participant agreement but do not need to attend). Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions; we will hike rain or shine. Dressing in layers works best.
Wear appropriate footwear for hiking.
Please bring water, snacks and any personal medicines and gear you may need as well. These outings are free but you are responsible to have everything you need.
A camera and/or binoculars are always a welcome addition.
Leashed, people friendly, well socialized outdoor dogs are welcome at this venue.
Please arrive 15 minutes before hand because we want to get started on time.
If you have any trouble finding our meetup location please feel free to call before the event kicks off. Andy’s cell phone is[masked]-4503.

Thanks so much, Andy, for another wonderful hike. Can you give me the name of the group that you are leading in Diamond State Forest? I tried looking up Coco Adventurers Club but perhaps that is wrong.

Thank you to all those brave souls who proved impervious to cold weather for joining L.L. Bean Mansfield for our Winter Ponds and Lakes hike in F. G. Hills State Forest. I’ve posted the few photos I took. Please post any you may have taken so everyone can enjoy them. My GPS once again failed to record the entire trip. I hope the acquisition of a new smart phone will solve that issue. Thanks again and hope to see you all on our next outing: Sunset on Sundown Ledge and Fire Road Ramble in F. Gilbert Hills SF on 2/1. --Andy

I had a great time. It was cold but we kept up a good pace and that helped to keep us warm. Andy was great as well. I will definitely be joining him on other weekend hikes.

Here's my trail conditions report for tomorrow's outing as of noon 1/25: I ran the 5 mile route today and there's only 2-3 inches of snow on the trails. Snowshoes will not be needed. You may find traction devices (Stabilicers/YakTrax) and trekking poles helpful. There were quite a few hikers, dog walkers and mountain bikers out today compressing the snow. Tomorrow looks to be about 20 degrees colder so dress warmly. Hope to see you tomorrow on the outing. --Andy
