HIBACHI DINNER (SHORT NOTICE - THIS THURSDAY)

PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU ARE ABLE TO COME.

This Hibachi and Sushi restaurant is one of my favorite FUN dining experiences.  The food is delish, and it's fun to watch the Hibachi chef perform while making your meal.

Although Yelp only has them at 3.5 stars, Urban Spoon reviewers give them a 94% rating.  And I've eaten here.  The food is good, and the atmosphere depends on who is in the group that's eating together.  I'm absolutely SURE that this group can make it the most fun!!

The prices for the Hibachi range from approximately $14 to $40 (without tax and tip or drinks).  It all depends on whether you're looking to get chicken, shrimp, scallops, steak, filet mignon, a combination ... or the special "12oz imperial steak, lobster shrimp or scallop, served with ice cream or sherbet".  Here's Yelp's menu for the restaurant. The restaurant itself does not seem to have a website, so keep in mind, prices may be different.

We will each pay for what we order (food and drink) and will use the x1.3 rule (take the cost of your meal/drinks and multiply by 1.3 to get the total with tax and tip.

This will be a CASH ONLY event!  Please come prepared, because it's a bit of a trek to the closest ATM.

It wasn't just our hibachi chef was boring and non engaging. I have noticed around the room that other tables weren't clapping or laughing either. Usually while sitting waiting, I can hear jokes from other chefs instead of just a bunch of cling and clang noises from them beating on their cookware. I have encountered many different hibachi chefs, favorites are the Chinese trying to act Japanese while speaking broken English. Also favorite part is when the chefs try to flip pieces of zucchini into the guests mouths which our guy didn't do at all.

And the fatal shot to the head was the fact that when I needed some hot sauce to spice up my meal coz it tasted bland to me, I was asked to pay a dollar coz they are the "special" kind. Really?

One last thing, about the men's room. The urinal was place right against the wall instead of it being centered in a 3 feet wide space. Why?

I cannot comment on the men's room. Not sure I actually want to have the image in my mind either. LOL! But you are right about the lack of entertainment. It would have been nice to have more interaction with the chef. I am going to set up a second event after I get back for Benihana. We can compare. :-)

First of all, thanks to Lisa for organizing, appreciate you taking time out to gather a small bunch of us for a friendly meal.

Here is my review of Midori Matsu:

I have been to many hibachi dinner both on land and on cruises. When I choose to have hibachi for dinner, I look forward mostly to the entertainment and not so much for the food since they are mostly prepared with simple flavoring (soy sauce, garlic, butter, salt, pepper and the fancy lemon. I'm a foodie and for the amount paid, I can certainly do better.

This was a very tasty and very filling meal! The chef was nice, and somewhat funny, although as Eric pointed out, a little more subdued than you might be used to for a Hibachi place. But then again, we were all chatting with each other, so maybe he wasn't wanting to interrupt. But I had a great time, hanging with friends and making new ones! Welcome to Tracy and Estela! And it was great to spend a nice meal with the rest of you, Eric, Margie, Ray, Jennifer, Dorothy and Aaron (who was our very welcome party crasher!)

Just one word of advice for next time, sneak in your own hot sauce!! :-)

Turns out map is wrong. Take F train to 75th. Get off back of subway, exit south side. Walk a block away from city.

Does this mean we will finally see you again, Jeff?!?! :-)

LOL! I have been scouring the announcements hoping for an opportunity to "meet up" again! Truth. It's tough with my daughter's schedule. I also look at the photos and messages posted, living vicariously through all the attendees! This one is a real possibility since I am finally getting over this terrible cold. I won't hog a spot until I know for sure! :)
