Grand Staircase

Grand Staircase is a steep 1100 foot climb up the sandstone face of the Calico Hills overlooking Red Spring Picnic Area in Calico Basin. From the top, we'll enjoy beautiful views of both Red Rock Canyon and Calico Basin.
Our pace for this hike will be moderate and somewhat exploratory. Nonetheless, the initial ascent will be highly strenuous. Only advanced beginners should sign up! This  hike will be a  Loop and not the  usual out and back .

The initial climb to the summit is very strenuous and requires the use of both hands and feet (class 3). Exposure will be minimal although serious injury is always a possibility when scrambling.

It's important that we stay together as a group to avoid steep drop-offs if you happen to wander off-course.

If you want to hike at a fast pace please do NOT sign up for this hike!

Water / Snack:  Bring at least 2 liters of water and a snack or energy food. There will be a stop at the top for a rest/ snack break.

Cameras: Encouraged and there is time for pictures

LIP GLOSS: Encouraged!

No Trace Principles:  enforced

Distance: 2 miles loop

Elevation gain: 1100 ft

Scrambling: Class 3

Difficulty: 3.0 for most of hike.

Pace : moderate, but no one left behind.

Children: no

Dogs: no

Time: max 3 hours.

Fear Factor: Moderate if you are afraid of heights.

A hat and sunscreen are highly recommended.

Gloves are helpful to help protect your hands.
