Join us in the red catherdral canyons of Zion, Utah and be dazzled by the star streaking sky show of the Perseids Meteor shower!
This once a year meteor shower has as many as 60 meteors per hour at its peak and this is said to be one of the best viewing years as the moon will not interrupt the viewing and the Swift-Tuttle Comet which leads the meteor shower will be the closest to our atmosphere it has been in some time. It should be a great show! Telescopes are not needed for this meteor shower, you can see the best meteors with just your eyes and a clear sky with no "light polution" (ie.. the lights of a city or the strip).
We will have a group site in the Watchman Campground, tent camping only, right in the park at Zion. The campground has full facilites (running water, showers, restrooms), private grilling stations, tall cottonwood trees for shade, its located riverside on the Virgin River so we can play and cool off :) and the area has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, nature abounds everywhere - deer visit the campground, my son's favorite night time adventure is frog viewing, hundreds of bird species stop at the waterside - just waking up is an adventure for your eyes in Zion!
We are reserved for the dates of Friday August 17th, 2012 and Saturday, August 18th, 2012 leaving on Sunday August 19th, 2012.
Please Note: There is a NON REFUNDABLE Fee of $15 per person for this Meetup, this is to cover the cost of the campground for the weekend. Spaces for this campout are limited so please RSVP only if you are certain you can go.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 2012:
Arrival and setup - there will be a carpool leaving from the Rampart Casino in Summerlin at 8:30 am and check-in time at the campground is as early as 12:30pm.
Camp setup, maybe a splash in the Virgin River, a bit of nature walking etc, then a potluck dinner (remember to say what you are brining in your RSVP). Then lets get the fire pit ready for making smores and pocket pies :)
Anyone who is interested can join us for a short night hike down the virgin river, complete with bat viewing!
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18 2012 :
You are welcome to join the hikes or hike on your own. You can also just enjoy the shops and restaurants of Springdale or just enjoy a day of leisure.
After breakfast let's go up into Zion canyon on the shuttle to the river walk. This is an easy half mile trail along the Virgin River to the Narrows, along the way you can view the weaping wall, see a fern forest (or what passes for a fern forest in the desert southwest) and watch for the abundant birds, lizards and beasties that dwell in the area. Experienced hikers with the proper equipment are free to explore upriver. You can easily rent wet hiking river equipment in town at Zion River Outfitters. The rest of us may take the Kayenta trail to the emerald pools and then go back to the Zion Lodge or maybe enjoy one of the areas bistros - believe it or not, the area is known for having spectacular dining. I am a huge fan of Pizza and Noodle! or Oscars! or anything!
We can take a short drive to a special viewing area to see the Meteor Shower and take a nightime peek at the herds of buffalo on the North side of the park.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 2012:
Checkout time is 11:00am. For the more ambitious travelers you can come with me to Calvary Chapel St. George for thier 11am service - I will be sneaking out of the campsite at 10am. We usually sneak in something in St George also as it is a charming little town and worth the stop.
