Run to the Shrine Volunteering and Visit to the Zoo

Good Morning, Ladies!

I was thinking it would be fun to volunteer at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Run to the Shrine on Saturday, May 17, 2014. We would get a free t-shirt and entrance to the zoo that day.

Please only RSVP if you can make it out, as the race will be depending on us as volunteers.

I received the following e-mail from the coordinator: "We are in need of many more volunteers. So as many as you can do would be wonderful. Please let me know as soon possible how many ladies you can spare! Also let me know if there is a specific area that you all would like to do. We have the following: Finish lines, Course Water Stations, Registration, Finish Water, Start lines...etc.

We are so grateful for you willingness to participate in this event.

I look forward to hearing from you.

There was very poor organization. The left hand didn't seem to know what the right was doing. There was unusually poor communication with the police and all those who worked at the zoo. I was disappointed.

Well, we certainly will not do this event again in the future. I will likely volunteer on my own, but definitely will not include it as a meetup.

Some things were disorganized but that was the volunteer staff and yes we didn't meetup afterwards at the zoo nonetheless the time we volunteered was short and the runners appreciated us cheering them on and getting free admission was nice. My son and I had a great time at the zoo. Definately do this again!!!

I had such a great time. The volunteer aspect of the meet up was short and sweet. We started walking back to towards parking until another member picked us up. We did go to the zoo and had an incredible time. Free admittance to the zoo and a free tee.......so there. I am so glad I went to this meet up! When other agencies are involved in the discretion of what you do it is quite out of the hands of the group.

First, I didn't visit the zoo, so that part doesn't count. Rather unorganized in getting the people togeter due to many misunderstandings. The job they had us doing did not need to be done, at least where my partner and I were stationed. It really seemed like a waste of my time EXCEPT that I met some very nice people and I learned what in the world Bunco is! So that made it worthwhile. :)

Okay.... They put us on a school bus. No signs at the church. It is the first church past the barricade (which they will open for you).

Good News, Ladies! We don't have to meet until 5:45. LOL. Michelle has told us to meet in the volunteer parking lot on the West side of the Broadmoor. (There will be signs.) I THINK it will be at 9 El Pomar Rd - Colorado Springs, CO. We will be meeting Jackie in a BRIGHT orange shirt. We are going to be assigned 10K course marshalls, which probably means making sure people don't accidentally run off course and to cheer on runners. (I'm thinking I might want to get some pom-poms at party city.)

I guess we shouldn't do these types of events in the future. I hope we don't cause the zoo to not be able to run their race correctly. I'm getting nervous and embarrassed.

    • Amy

Yes, I agree that it is hard for some to manage their crazy schedules. Luckily, that's not us. Deanna, I know this is just 'one more thing', but I was wondering if you might provide The Ladies with paper name tags???? This is the first event I've been able to attend, so I was thinking other people as well as myself might want to see the person's name and meet up group name of those who volunteered. Just a suggestion. I look forward to meeting you. Amy

I will try to come up with some name tags. :) If not- the zoo might provide them. I'm not sure.

The 10K registration opens at 6:15- so I'm thinking volunteers would report around 6 AM depending on the assignment.
