Book Club

Laid Back Ladies Literary Club. Meet once a month. Every month a different genre. While most reads will be fiction, occasionally some can/will be nonfiction if the group wants to add in one month of nonfiction.Group limited at 15. If there's enough interest we could possibly break it up into two groups.

FORMAT: We will select names monthly in order to enable everyone to have a chance to pick a selection or place to meet. The person whose name is picked will select from a "jar" the genre we will read for the following month. This breaks all of us out of our "reading comfort zone." We can give suggestions to that person but it will be up to the person whose name has been drawn to select our book for the following month, where the meeting will be located as well as what we will do at the meeting (discussion at a coffee shop, doing something from in the book, etc.) This keeps it fun and everyone feels they have had a "say" in what we read.

I'm going to say unreserve my spot.. I think I am going to have trouble making the meetings. Bummer for me.. Good for someone else.

When anything starts, there is quite a bit of moving parts going on such as Jennifer not being able to join, schedules interrupting etc. So at this point, you are welcome to join. Please see the information below on the book and join on the upcoming meeting site.

Look under upcoming meetings and you'll probably have to go to the "more" area since our next meeting isn't until June. Sign up there.

I'm a bit lost, a newbie here to meet ups. Was there a limit to people joining this? Is it now closed????

Great to meet everyone and I'm really looking forward to getting together again!

The book for June is...(drum roll)... The Whip, by Karen Kondazian. The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst [masked]) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man in the old west. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love with a runaway slave and had his child. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track the killer. Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

Oh man, talk about a kick-off! Can't wait for the discussion on this one!

I'm new to meet ups, and I can't find this actual group in my listings. Did I miss something, or did a group for this book already form ? Looking forward to meeting y'all!

This was my first opportunity to meet other people in Colorado Springs and everyone seems really nice. I will be anxious to see what book is chosen. I'm not sure I have ever read a "western". Should be interesting. :)

Well I'm not sure now if I'll be able to make it. Looks like one of my kids is getting sick. On a side note, is anyone in the group from the Fountain/Security/Widefield area? Maybe we can carpool to the more northern meetups.

I'm still up in the air right now but if I end up going would you like to carpool?

I hope that I can join in the future! I am almost done with my Masters' Degree so I will have free time to read books I really want to read!

I'm still kind of new to this whole thing, so how do I know if I made the list of people going?

    May 16, 2014

  • Vikki W.

Okay, it looks like we've reached the cut-off. Holding spots for Lindy, Melissa, Jennifer and Carrie if they want to join when things are more settled. After that, unless someone drops out, I'm going to consider the group closed with the current list. Rebekah, will hold your spot if can't make it due a sick kiddo. Also, since I'd like to kick off at 7 pm if you want to grab a drink before we get going, please plan on arriving before 7 to get that taken care of before we start. Thanks and looking forward to meeting you all in person. Quote: A home without books is like a room without windows.

Is this still happening or not?

    May 15, 2014

    • Vikki W.

Sheila, please note that we will be meeting at Pikes Perk Academy at 7 p.m.

      May 15, 2014

This is something that I would definitely be interested in if there is still room in the group. I LOVE to read. Am I understanding this correctly in that tomorrow will be the first meeting and there hasn't been a book chosen yet? Please let me know if I can join in. I just moved to Colorado Springs and am anxious to meet other people in the area.

Sadly I won't be able to make it. Maybe someone will have a meetup near Monument sometime :)

    May 14, 2014

  • Jennifer

I don't know if I can make this. My son has a scout thing. When/Where is the next meet up? I'd like to read the book that is decided on. if i'm not there, i'll just read whatever is picked :)

    I'll be there!

I'd love to come but can't this first meeting - can I join anyway and catch up next month?

    May 13, 2014

    • Vikki W.

Yes. Until we reach the cut-off point anyone can join. Also since this is mainly a meet and greet to begin the book club you won't miss too much.

Here is my idea for the Laid Back Ladies Literary Club. As noted in the comments, there are some various places we can meet. I recommend we meet this Friday as a get-to-know you time. Personally I prefer supporting local businesses as much as possible but I know that can't always happen. We will draw a person's name for the following month as well as the genre. Then the person will need to let us know what book to read. That person will select the location and how we will discuss or enjoy the book for that month.

I'd love to be part of this but I have a mandatory banquet on Friday. If you still have a spot for me after all the RSVPs I would love it. I'm willing to host as well!

    May 12, 2014

    • Vikki W.

Not to worry. As one of the first responders, I'll save you a spot if you decide to join for next month.

I'd suggest meeting at Barnes and Noble Starbucks area. We can talk and then look for ideas/present ideas for reading. We could look at new or books that we could also get at the library. We can decide at that time where we'd like to meet in the future.

It appears there is no location for this Friday, and some question whether this is a go or not. If yes, I sugest we pick a place to meet - Panera's, Pike's Perk, Poor Richard's, anyplace that is convenient. While I am unable to host it at my house this week, I am willing to take a turn at it if we decide to rotate. I am just excited to become involved with a book club, so I hope we can make this happen!

Would need to get another person to rsvp so we can open it up to the group. Kris or Jennifer, if you would rsvp that would help. You can always choose not to attend later.

What general area is vicki's house located? Will it always be there? Poor Richard's might be a good place to meet depending how many of us there are.

I would love to join this.

  • Vikki W.

Hi all. Sorry but I've had work commitments come up and may not be able to get this going anytime soon. This was unexpected so I apologize. For now I'm going to cancel the idea unless someone else wants to take it on. I enjoy PR but I hate having to mess with parking and driving downtown. If we prefer to meet at a coffee shop we could consider Pikes Perk on Academy or some other idea.
