  • Thomas Hardy is allegedly one of the best English novelists- up there with Dickens and Austen. I say allegedly, because I have never read any of his works. Am I the only one? When I saw that there were cliffnotes and sparknotes for the book- I thought to myself, "Uh oh...This looks like one of those books I should have already read before!"

So here we have it- The Return of the Native:

One of Thomas Hardy's most powerful works.

Here is a pretty glowing review:

"This is a titanic book—reminiscent of Wuthering Heights in that it's one of those great, dark romances where the landscape plays such an important role. I found it impossible not to be swept up in the story of Eustacia Vye and Clym Yeobright. This book is an extraordinary epic that shows human behavior—particularly with regard to love and ambition and jealousy—in its most extreme and passionate forms."

    — Kenneth Branagh

And Oprah says that this is a "classic that made a difference." (We will see...I look forward to discussing if that is truly the case."

But here is the really good part- on the Kindle- it's free! (One of the benefits of reading a classic!)

It's also in paperback for less then $9.00 or less then 25 cents used!

I think as the weather begins to change- it seems like a good idea to cuddle up with a classic- What do you think?

Darn, and I just finished it too. Well, if anybody, who has read the book, wants to discuss it tonight, they can come to my house. Just let me know and I'll send you the address.

Uh oh! I just got a call from Andrew and he said that he is coming home sick from work. I don't want to expose you to his nasty germs- so I think we'll have to reschedule this one. Sorry, ladies!! Pick up Lost December, which is our December book club book.

How is everyone doing on the book? I'm not particularly enjoying the writing style .... at all. I'm wondering if I should keep forcing myself to push on, while so many other books are beckoning.

I've always felt that there are too many good books out there to enjoy without having to plug along with something you're not liking. Unfortunately I can't make it anyway. Sorry girls. Marty
