Introduction To Stand Up Paddleboarding Class

  • Jul 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a 2-hour ACA course called "Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding."  Below is a detailed outline.   The park normally charges $40 for this training, but our meetup group only pays $35 (includes all equipment needed).  You need to register through me for now because the park web site is not set up for online registration yet.   I can accommodate 5 students at a time.  I will do a second session in the afternoon if we have a few on the waiting list.  If interested, I will need a firm commitment since spaces are limited.   I am an ACA (American Canoe Association) Level 2 instructor and I will issue you a ACA card upon completion.  For those who want to stay a little longer, we will do a short trip after the class and lunch if you so desire.

EVERYTHING below is Challenge by Choice.  You can opt out of anything you don't feel comfortable doing (falling in the water, remounting, pivot turns, etc.)

Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboading

The course will start with a 20-minute on shore presentation, with 90 minutes on the water, and ending with a 10-minute wrap up on land.  The following outline includes the highlights, but more will be covered.

On shore presentation:

• Personal clothing

• Safety equipment such as PFD’s

• Board terminology• Paddle orientation and use

• Board carries

On the water:

• Launching and landing

• Positions on the board – prone, sitting, kneeling, standing

• Proper falling techniques• Unassisted remounting of your board in the water

• Strokes – forward sweep, reverse sweep, basic forward and reverse strokes, draw strokes, bracing, safe shoulder paddling techniques

• Maneuvering the board (paddling in straight line, stopping, turns, spinning the board with a pivot turn)

• Use of a board leash

Wrap up

• How the ACA can help you

• Tips on purchasing equipment

• Next steps to developing your skills

• Opportunities to paddle with others

So glad you came, Monica. I would enjoy leading SUP or kayak meetup with Ladies of Fairfax Adventure Group.

Things look good for Saturday. Please let me know immediately if you change your mind. There is a waiting list. Be prepared to get wet. Most people prefer to go barefoot on their SUP, but any footwear that can get wet is OK. Bring some water and a snack. Come a little early so you can do the paperwork and be ready to start instruction by 9 AM.

For the waiting list people, I will repeat the class on August 10.

Does this cost include the SUP? If not how much to rent a SUP?

So glad you can attend. I know you will really enjoy SUP. Let me know if I can help you on Friday at Lake Ridge with your group. I already told Ron to expect you.
