Belmont Bay Paddle

This will be our first meetup NOT in Lake Ridge Park. Belmont Bay is bordered by Occoquan National Wildlife Refuge and Mason Neck State Park. It is a great place for watching eagles and ospreys. We will paddle from Occoquan Regional Park at 1:00 PM and loop around Conrad Island, which is in Belmont Bay. For those interested, I will also talk about the plant life in Belmont Bay, especially submerged aquatic vegetation.  The total paddle will be about 5 miles.

Kayaks can be rented this weekend from Occoquan Regional Park, bit I have no discount here, so the fee is $9/hour.  The launch fee is $4 for jurisdiction and $5 for non-jurisdiction.

Please be ready to launch at 1:00 PM. Now that the water is getting cooler, I do not recommend trying to catch up to us on your own if you are late. We will need to stay together as a group from this point onward. Bring a set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag in case you get wet. This meetup is suitable for beginners in recreational kayaks, although experienced paddlers in longer kayaks are needed to help with the group. Stand Up Paddleboards are welcome, but you must paddle with others for safety.  We will return by 4 PM.

Great going to new place for kayaking. I had been there many times fishing but first time in a kayak.

For those renting, get there early enough so we can launch at 1 PM. I don't work for this park so I can't speed up the process like I do at Lake Ridge. I think a park employee will be sitting by the rentals to help you.

While i've done the Kanes Creek from Mason Neck, i've been intimidated about the Belmont Bay 'big water' to get to Conrad Island, and going there from Occuquan Regional with a group sounds like a perfect plan. Not sure if I will join the aggressive paddlers to cross the big water, but this will help me expand my horizons either way....

Uh - what is the water flow situation like there? Is it tide effected? According to charts, will be low going to high for the whole paddle (1pm low - 6pm high), so that would be against us going to the island / Mason Neck, with us going back, which is perfect (assuming it makes any difference at all)...

Tides are not a significant factor in this area, but we will have the tides helping us in each direction. Winds are a bigger factor in Belmont Bay, but wind speed will be fairly low on Saturday.

I checked with Occoquan Regional Park, and they still have kayak rentals this weekend. But, I don't have a special deal with them, so it will be the regular price - I believe $9/hour

Some of you more aggressive kayakers and SUP'ers can push on to Mason Neck and make it an 8-mile trip!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
