Staunton State Park - Level 5?

  • June 15, 2013 · 9:00 AM

There's a new kid in town! This park just opened on May 18. (that's in the future if you are reading this today) I have no idea what the trails are like but I want to! Come explore[masked]ft of trails with me. Here are a couple of links. Since this is an unknown trail system, I am only allowing strong riders with a sense of adventure and a good attitude. There are 17 miles of mtb trails

It's a state park so it's a $7 par fee if you don't have a pass.

Great trail. Definitely keep the rating at 5. Lots of climbing with a couple of really steep ones. Loose granite like Buffalo Creek so have to watch out on those turns! Beautiful park with a couple of aspen groves that should be beautiful in the fall.

It shouldn't be too hard. I've been eating veggie lately so most likely BBQ veggies. But there will be beer!

All went well. Shifting like a dream again and nice and shiny - well the new parts are shiny next to the mud covered parts.

So I couldn't wait, I had to go check it out! Wide, smooth trails are nice--nothing crazy, just overall nice riding. If you ride Bugling/Marmot clockwise you get to come down a challenging rock garden (see pic). Coming back down Mason Creek to the parking lot was fast and fun! I look forward to going back soon!

Emily, the level 5 reading was due to mileage and the unknown new trail system. It's still an exploratory ride even with some scouting reports.

Does anyone want to carpool from Denver?

    June 10, 2013

Rode all 15 miles of trails open to mtn bikes. As bryce said, wide (5') smooth singletrack the whole way. 2700' of climbing. Very limited parking---ranger told us they've been filling up between 10 and 11 every weekend they've been open. We got there at 9, lower lot full by 9:30. Dappled shade on some trails, but definitely potential to get really hot. Mason Creek is a ripping fun downhill. Well-signed on 285, so easy to find. Have a great ride!

This doesn't much sound like level 5 riding beyond lots of climbing...are there fun technical sections? Or is it all smooth wide dirt trails?
